After starting a post on my final build to see what people would suggest on it. I got a post telling me the 8000 series of card will be out this December or the start of next year is this true? If so should i buy a lower end card and wait? or go with the 7970 now?

any input on this would be much appreciated!

Here's the link to that thread

If you keep waiting for the newest and best you'll always be waiting, first it will be for the 8000 series, than in 3 more months will be nvidias 700 series. My point is if you don't make up your mind at some point you'll always be sitting around waiting and asking what should I get. The 7970 and 680 are both more than capable cards, hell you could even flip a coin

None of the above, get the 7870 and wait for the 8970 to get the fullest potential out of your 120hz screen thumb.gif

Seeing as the 8000 series is just around the corner should i go with the 680 instead of the 7000 series right now? Also i'm tempted to just say 670 and in 1 year sell and buy one of the new cards after the drivers catch up. What would you suggest?

I realize that cards 2 gens old are still killing all the games our right now. The card gens are flying out faster then the games are.The problem is I have been out of the computer parts world for a few years now. Last time i kept up with things the i7 920 just came out and was killing everything it seen. So i'm a bit worried about trusting myself when it comes to these situations.

I am a firm believer that the 2nd gen on a process brings the best possible GPUs for a given manufacturing process. For example GTX 580 launched when the 40nm process had matured and it fixed the problems in GTX 480. Waiting for the HD 8970 or GTX 780 is not a bad idea. We all know that a new generation has been launching every year and so the HD 8970 is due for launch in Jan 2013. The performance expectations are for a 30% faster chip. But as usual unless Nvidia launches GTX 780 you will not see a fierce competition in pricing. So if GTX 780 launches in late Q1 2013 as per a few articles then HD 8970 pricing might not be great till GTX 780 launches.

First: care to name that handful of games? We are talking 1920 resolutions here.
Second: Even if a game uses more than 2GB, it doesn't mean it needs it. What I would like to see in stead of reports on VRAM usage is reports of cases where performance and/or graphics quality has taken a hit because of VRAM running out. I can report one case, that is GTA IV with "-norestrictions" maxed out on a GTX 570 1.3GB. That resulted in texture pop-ins.
And finally: I'm pretty sure the new consoles are going to have 2GB of memory at most. That is 2GB total memory, shared with the CPU and GPU. That's better than the current generation but still won't make 2GB of VRAM on GPU alone a bottleneck.

Max Payne 3 and Civ V are two right off of my head And I really don't want to go digging around to find out which ones there are that I vaguely remember, because the only way you find out if games use that much is the odd forum post scattered on the net

Max payne 3 uses just above 2 gigs, so no, I won't say it causes a performance drop to have 2 gigs, but Civ V has been seen using 2,3 gigs and could easily go higher if you wanted it to

Now if you'll excuse me it seems my period key suddenly stopped working doh.gif

I would HIGHLY, HIGHLY, doubt we see anything of the 8000 series until Spring of 2013, no way in heck we are going to see anything this December.

Didn't convince me. I'm just going to leave this here:

http://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/Point_Of_View/GeForce_GTX_680_TGT_Ultra_4_GB/31.html

Bottom of that page, memory usage for 5760x1080 and 4800x2560 resolutions. Max Payne 3 and Civ V in there, as well as all the other TPU games. That doesn't say how much the games actually need but even judging by the usage, 2GB seems like a lot for a single 1920 monitor.

And to the OP: don't let the waiting game take you. There's no release date, the availability might take a while even after that and what ever performance advantage the 8000 series will have over the current cards is going to put the price that much higher (and then some). Current cards will not become obsolete just because something even more powerful will eventually come out.

I would strongly caution against bringing consoles into the discussion and using them as a point of relevance for performance.

PC's are going to stay drastically more powerful than they are and games on PC are going to have completely different requirements. Even console ports to PC are going to run differently and have different requirements than their console brethren. A fine example of this is Skryim, when the modding community got a hold of it for PC they changed the game, you can now mod Skyrim to have silly hardware requirements, but it looks amazing.
