I can't get past 4ghz with my 8120

What could the prob be? I can't manage to keep it stable after 4.0ghz. It seems like especially when I start touching the fsb the computer is unstable. I haven't touch anything on the ram yet. Here are my current stable settings:

 

The mobo's a gigabyte ga-970a-ds3

That motherboard is not overclocking ready, especially on a 125w tdp cpu. It only has a 4+1 vrm system, with no heatsinks on it.

I like to start overclocking with just the multiplier first, then work on fsb. I have the 8150 at 4.7

hello,
try 1.39v ,should reach 4.4 with it.check your cpu load line config manual it ,then put it under a prime load and watch the voltage while you do,change load line till same voltage under load is reached.

auraofjason is right. That motherboard is not going to get you far at all overclocking an 8-core AMD FX chip. The power design is not sufficient for maintaining a high overclock and the MOSFETs will overheat easily with no cooling on them. If you want to keep trying on that board you need to at the very least get a heatsink of some sort on the MOSFETs.

Have you experienced any CPU speed throttling or just obvious instability?

Won't handle FX 8-core with an overclock without VRM cooling. Might not at all, actually. The ASUS M5A88-M completely can't handle an FX 8-core overclocked without protective-throttling. Might be a good time to consider a new board with a high quality 6+2 - 8+2 phase, like I recommend for just about all FX 8-core buyers.

The problem is that i'm on a budget and I bought that board because of that. Oh well, thanks to everyone that tried to help me.
