Results from volt-mod not as expected

Thread Starter
Just volt-modded my 7900GT, up to 1.55vCore, and 2.25vMem.

Managed to push core up to 720 from 590, and memory from 900 to 966.

But, my 3DMark06 score dropped from 4500 to 4100 (I did notice the firefly test was worse than before).

Core temp hits 60C or so at full load. Memory does have heatsinks on.

What could be causing this?

Lower it a bit and try again, might be running unstable.

720 from 590 seems a little much... put it at 650 and see what happens. the ram increase doesnt seem much at all for a volt mod... usually u can get an extra 100-150 MHz out of stock

volt mods usually gain 300 or more.. but u need to put some active cooling on that beast..

Oh, those speeds I overclocked from aren't stock. Stock speeds are... 450core and 660memory.

I overclocked it, then got a new cooler and oc-ed some more, then volt-modded and oc-ed even more (using ATI Tool).

Yeah, I have a Zalman VF-900, on full speed, and a 12cm blower fan right next to it, blowing air out the case.

Will drop speed to 7900GTX level, and run 3DMark06 again.

ummm... unless anyone has ever seen a 300MHz gpu overclock.. i dont think that is possible on air... maybe phase or some other subzero cooler.. but iv never seen any more then 200mhz OC stable on air..

I now get 3949 on 3DMark06, and it may in fact not be stable, as the ATI Tool artifact scan gives me nice yellow pixels on the test screen. But, it doesnt consider them errors:

Have I botched the mod, is the problem driver/software related, or do I simply need liquid cooling (temps seem good, so I don't see why)?

Looks like you have put the core up to much, bring it down like Ace and GonX said. Your probably stressing it to much, thats nearly a 100% OC on the core.

Bring it down to 600 and work up again in 5's

Lower the core.

I problems with my 7900GT with the 1.55 V-Mod, anything over 700mhz core and it would artifact in games, sometimes it wouldn't get through 3DMark without crashing

Well, I dropped my core clock AGAIN, to 600MHz (before the volt mod, it was 590MHz, and the memory was the same as it is now - 900MHz). I now get 3901, which is a drop from 3949, and nowhere near 4500, which I had before the mod.

My 7600GS was stock at 400mhz and I overclocked it to 800 mhz with the volt mod. I got higher scores at 700 mhz, however. Just drop it to 700 mhz and see what you get.

The memory on my GS didn't gain any speed at all with extra voltage. Maybe try to reduce the memory clock and keep the core cranked up.

I've got the same cooler (Zalman vf900) and temps are nice and stable.
