So many of these kickstarter games that I will most likely forget about them by the time they come out, but when they do come out I will the crap out of them. The concepts of these kickstarter games always look so interesting.

It takes time to develop a quality game, in most cases 2-3 years. If a game coming out two years from now is too far away for you to care about, then I guess you won't be playing Fallout 4, the next Mass Effect game, Battlefield 4, or any game currently in the early stages of development.

The reason it feels further away than any of the games I just mentioned is because none of those have been officially unveiled yet. The devs for star citizen have said that if they were funding this project in the traditional manner with a publisher they wouldn't be revealing the game until a year from now. However, since this is a space sim for high end pcs, crowd funding was their only option to get the project off the ground. Can you imagine the looks on a bunch of EA or Activision suites if someone pitched to them making a game that belongs to a "dead" genre, will be pc only, and needs a high end graphics card to play?

Having met the minimum funding goal we've proven them wrong so far, now it's just a matter of how many stretch goals we can reach, which will determine how awesome the game will be when it comes out. Also, don't forget that if you pledge you will get access to the Alpha and Beta, of which the multiplayer dogfighting alpha is projected to be finished a year from now.

So, games today are now funded, then bought by the consumer? Seems like the recent fad.

In a world where game publishers are only interested in making games that end in 3, 4, or 5 (i.e. re-hashed sequels with no creativity), yes, game developers that want to make something original increasingly have to turn to crowd funding to make their game.

I haven't seen one crowd funded game that requires you to buy the game after it is released. All of them include the finished game with your pledge.

Have you seen a crowd funded game actually get released? Serious question...I've never heard of one.

The way it is supposed to work is they get funding to make the game on their own...and then people buy it. If no one buys it...then they are screwed.

This is like pre-ordering, but in a masochist, extreme fashion. Paying them before they've even done the work rather than before they've finished the work. They could very well take the $2 million and head to Mexico.

I'd really like for a game that matches the concept to be released and I would likely buy it soon after release...but I can't justify paying for it now.

Thread Starter
New trend, crowdfunding. So your point is somewhat blunted by the fact that "no one" has really done this before until rather recently. (The whole kickstarter thing is rather new)

At one point, no one had flown before either, but it did happen.

Though your point is well taken and I can imagine that some of these kickstarter things will come to nothing. Let's just hope Chris Roberts, a once HUGE name in the gaming industry, can make a comeback.

Lancer already pointed out crowdfunding is new so there hasn't been time for a game to be fully developed. To your other point of them heading to mexico, that is why I don't just throw money at random great sounding games, I have only pledged to two different games (doublefine and this game). Like with everything you have to think before you spend your money or someone will screw you.
