normal 7970 temps?

Thread Starter
I just purchased a new Diamond 7970 3g card. I flashed the bios to the ghz(?) version. My idle temps are extremly high..prior to the flash I idled at 50c-55c after the flash 50-60c. I'm pretty certain these are high temps at idle. At load during BF3 ultra settings i'm hitting 81c. it never gets higher...I've seen those temps on my old 570, but I could tame it with a small fan speed increase. This card past 46% sounds like a jet engine. I'm thinking about returning it to Microcenter but before I do just want to see what you all thought.

Does this card usually run hot? Is 80c acceptable at load? Will the idle temp of 50-55c lower the life of my card? I have changed the thermal paste already and got no diffrence at all.

I don't have one, but as far as all reviews show 80-something at load is normal. About the idle temps they seem a bit high maybe, but not that high; you can't hope to get below 40-something on such a card on stock cooling. It also depends what is the temp in your house, 5 degrees more in the room will give 5 more (at least) on the GPU.
Such a huge card needs a big case and very good airflow. Try to improve the cooling on the back of the card on the CPU side, at idle you should see some improvement.

Are you on more than one monitor? I have issues where the volts don't go down. I idle around 60c with one 1440p and one 1080p screen. under load about 78c-82c. down to 70c with a custom fan profile that cranks up to 80% fan speed.

Issue with the drivers.

Hi, I modified mine with this http://www.overclockers.co.uk/showproduct.php?prodid=HS-062-AR , Since then my idle speed is 26 degrees and load 48 degrees also the fans are no louder than my case fans even at 100%

Before the mod I was hitting 90 degrees with the GHZ edition flash and having crashes. I don't think my idles was as high as yours though.
