Has anyone built a very large website on there own?

Hey guys. Firstly, this isn't one of those threads where I ask you how long it takes to make Facebook or anything. In fact, I know how long it would take and can prob create the 'old' Facebook myself in a week. However, creating a large social site from scratch alone; doing all the graphic work, backend coding, front end coding etc... Is taking quite a while.

I'm just curious If anyone has done something Iike this totally solo? I'm in the position where I have a good idea, but can't ask for help because well, I'm the only person I know that knows how to code backend and such. Does anyone have any experience with this sort of thing?

I've built many a platform back when I was still doing web development.
I created forum systems and I remember doing a live chat system.

I did some of the graphics, but I handed tricky stuff off to some other people I knew.

I've written so much PHP I can almost recite the whole PHP manual (OK maybe not quite...)...

Couple years development on the biggest projects and that was it for me. I am now back doing application development on Windows (where I started as a programmer). Boy have the web development days changed (not so much the backend...)

If you need help with anything, I don't mind providing small bits and bobs!

I seem to be ok. My weapon of choice is python in the app engine framework. I must say, it's pretty awesome. I was just curious if anyone has toughed out the immense workload alone. I suppose people have!

I think if two people orginally started on this project, I would be done by now haha. I would say I'm about 50% of the way there... Then into beta for a few weeks (hopefully).smile.gif

I have almost always been a solo developer smile.gif It gets rough at times, but its so satisfying... "holy crap, I wrote 100,000 lines myself for this damn thing!"
Good luck with your project!

For my graduation project I have created a Website where students can do the following:-

1- Register in college and choose their major and courses.
2- students will get a confirmation whether they were accepted in college or reject by Email and SMS.
3- Each student can login with his/her own username and password and view their grades for all of their subjects.
4- Each professor can login and Edit, Add, Delete students grades.
5- Each student will have a profile page just like Facebook and other students can go and add comments on the page.
6- Each student can go to a wiki page that I designed and can add notes, lecture notes, etc... and professor can go and see those post and edit or remove them.
7- The admin can create password usernames for students and professors and can edit subjects names time tables and many other things.

its was a big big project for me since I have never ever worked with PHP or SQL or even javascript.

It took me 3 days to learn php. I had to read 500 page book about php. and another day or so to learn SQL. and about a week to learn JavaScript and CSS.

I hated web development. It was the worst 3 months of my life sad-smiley-002.gif

The whole project took 3 months to design, code and create the documentation for it. typer.gif

Two other students were suppose to help me with the project but I guess they decided to fail and drop out of college hmmsmiley02.gif so work that was suppose to be done by three people in 3 month was done by only me and took me 3 months.

anyways glad all this is finish. now I can go back to game development.
