[BBC] Intel's Haswell chips are engineered to cut power use

Intel has released early details of its Haswell computer chips, due for release in the middle of next year.

One version of the processors will run at 10 watts, about half as much as its current Ivy Bridge design.

It said the improvement would mean devices could become thinner, faster and offer extended battery life.

In addition it said the chips were designed to better support "perceptual" tasks such as voice recognition, facial analysis and depth tracking.

Intel is the world's biggest semiconductor supplier to laptop and desktop PC manufacturers, outselling its x86-based chip rival AMD.

Doesn't this seem a bit early?
Quote:
"Battery life, for example, on an ultrabook next year will be nine hours for a system that would deliver five hours today," Adam King, Intel's director of notebook product marketing told the BBC.

This will be a huge selling point for them, nice.

Awesome stuff. Haswell will be my next upgrade for my desktop....long over due as I currently use a Phenom x6 1090t. Also around that same time I might be getting a new laptop and it looks like this will help a lot in the battery department.

This is nice and all but it seems like Intel is hyper-focused on the Ultrabook platform and that's all I keep hearing about. What about the rest of us with upgradable PCs that plug into the wall? We want octocores!

This! I'm eagerly anticipating more details & reviews. Haswell's OC potential and the impact of AVX2 are some of the biggest unknown areas, I think. Do we have a full list of the desktop TDP's yet? Intel's reportedly pursuing pretty high TDP's on the server (IB-EP and Haswell-EP, I think) but that may just be confined to the workstation space *sigh*
