240 or 360 Rad?

Hey everyone,

I am about to embark on a build and I was hoping to get your opinions on dual GPU cooling. I am going to either be getting dual GTX 670s or waiting and getting dual GK110s when they release in a few months. With that being the case I was looking at a Corsair 600T case and using a 120 and a 240 radiator for the CPU and 2 GPUs respectively. However I am debating the cooling potential of a HWLabs SR1-240 for two GPUs.

Do you think that a single 240 can handle either 2 GTX 670s at 340W before OCing or the new GK110s which will be over 400W before OCing? I figure if I need to I can go to a 360 and get an Obsidian 800D, but I would prefer a mid tower.

Also, in terms of fans I was looking at Corsair SP-120s or some Gentle Typhoons.

That 240 SR-1 will only dissipate around 200 watts with high speed fans (2200 RPM +). It would be a poor choice to attempt to cool dual GPU's. Even a single 360mm rad is going to need some good air to cool off dual GPU's at 100% load.

I highly doubt that the GK110 will be available in a couple months, the 6xx line isn't even finished. I would suggest the 670s which will be more than powerful enough.

Also, for SLI and water cooling, you may really want to reconsider your case choice. I personally wouldn't go with anything less than a 360/420 AND a 240/280 for a loop with 3 major heat sources.

Hmm, I may try an Obsidian 800D with an BlackIce 360 in the top and a 240 in the bottom. If only I had the tools to mod the bottom for the 240; that and deft hands to mod with.biggrin.gif

If you want to have more room for rads without the extensive modding that the 800D can require, there are some other options...
The NZXT Switch 810 supports a 360/420 + 240/280 + 120/140
The Xigmatec Elysium supports a 420/480 + 240/280
The Corsair C70 will fit a 280/240 + 240
Those are the ones that come to mind as far as "many rads for little money, without sacrificing quality" cases. There are others, I would just suggest keeping future expansion in mind, because you will always want more rads. Plus, the biggest rads you can fit to start with give you a lot of headroom and are much more efficient than fitting multiple small rads. For example, with an EX420 and UT60 240, I have a bit more surface area than the equivalent of 6.25x120mm rad with 15-18fpi (assuming it is 48mm thick). That's with just two rads, as 420 rads are really a great idea, and the EX420 and Alphacool NeXXos 420 rads are fantastic.

You can use 240 for the gpus as long as it's double thick. I had no problems with my thermochill pa120.3 and a 5GHz 2550K and 2X 5870s. I also had great temps when I used a single RX 240 with my current system.

I wish I could find what I was looking at earlier but I cannot seem to find the heat displacement numbers for the rads I was looking at. Also I am an idiot and I put the wrong radiator above. I was looking at the 240 GTX from HWLabs, not the SR1 240 for use with dual 670s or 680s; and a GTX 120 for the CPU. I remember the chart I saw listing their displacement numbers that had their displacement at values higher than what 2 670s (340W before OC) would put out and the 120 showed number that could handle a 3570k (77w before oc) just fine. Now that you mention the Alphacool NeXXos Monsta rads though, they seem awesome.

On a side note, how do you guys feel about CaseLabs stuff? It seems pricey, but I suppose if I need more room, they provide it.biggrin.gif

Based on the roumored specs of GK110 there is no way in hell that a single 240mm rad could handle that. I even have my doubts that a thin 240mm rad with a single set of fans could handle two 670s and a cpu. At least not at what I would call a reasonable fan speed.

You can mod a 360 into the roof of a 600t. It really doesn't look hard to do. You can also fit a 180mm in the front. That would give you more than enough headroom.

Yeah thin rads I doubt would do it as well. I thought that a thick rad like a GTX 240 or the Alphacool Monsta rad that nleksan linked could work. I have been having a hard time finding heat dissipation ratings for anything besides a GTX 360 though.thinking.gif

I'm thinking I may have to abandon the idea of a mid tower and go full with either an 800D with a 360 + 240 with some mod work, or just say screw it and perhaps get a Merlin from CaseLabs and use a 480 with maybe something else. I'll also take a look at modding a 600T for a 360 right now; thanks for the heads up!

id consider alphacool or XSPC or a rad line with lower fins per inch. coming from the GTX line
im getting a considerable better temperature with a lower FPI radiator even using 2200rpm fans.
now i can lower the fan rpm and lower the roaring sound and decrease temps.
especailly if it is a 24/7 machine.
