A strange problem, help!

Thread Starter
My 2nd system has a strange problem. Every 1-4 days it's locking up. I can move the mouse pointer sometimes when this happens but not always. I double checked my power settings and everything is set to never shut off. I can't soft boot at all when this happens and when I press the reset button, it can't find my hard drive to boot up. But after I shut off the power for a few seconds, it comes up fine. Has anyone ever had this problem?

Specs:
Athlon 939 X2 3800+ @ 2.4GHz
ASUS A8N32-SLI DELUXE
Zalman 9500
XFX 7900GT
2x1 Gig Kingston DDR400
HD 250 gig Seagate SATA2
Antec TPII-550W
Win XP Pro

This is my 2 core 24/7 folding rig, any help will greatly appriciated.

Check power connector to your HDD, I had a problem similar to this once and it was due to the hard drive shutting down because it didn't have power..

ok, checked that and everything was tight. I took the cable off both ends and put it back on in case for some reason it wasn't seated right. They snap on firmly. The sad part is it takes days to find out if that was the problem. Could it be an internal HD problem, is this a possibility?

It does sound strange, but a friend of mine had this same problem. It would be idle and lock up or whenver he tried to play a game it would lock up. Come to find out it was his graphics card drivers.(nVidia card) If you have tried to overclock your graphics card via rivatuner or similar program but for nvidia machines, I would try to reinstall the drivers. This fixed his, and it just so happens that for a while I had an nVidia card also and guess what... it would lock up. updated the drivers. and the problem disapeared.

It's worth a try. There may even be newer drivers than the ones I have installed now. I will check it out and give it a shot. Thanks for the info.

Sure no problem, try and let us know if it made any change at all, because if so, this information will be good for others who may end up with this problem.

Check the power settings in the bios. Normally nothings turned on by default but its worth a try.

It was actually enabled by default even though nothing in the sub menu was enabled, so disabled the master power setting just in case.
Thanks, good advice!

The graphics drivers were 91.?? and from what I read, Ver 84.56 are the ones to use for the 7900GT's. I DL the new drivers / removed the old ones / used driver cleaner pro / installed Ver 84.56 drivers. Everything went smooth. My only concern is that I only removed the graphics drivers. I hope that takes care of it.

Thanks for the help guys, now I wait to see if it locks up again.

could maybe be the signs of a dying hdd because the hdd is in low power mode after a long time. When it trys to spin up it fails and hence lockup
