3930k 5Ghz 1.5v, crazy temperature......

Thread Starter
just finished my water cooled rig yesterday

i used NZXT switch 810 with a Feser X-changer 360 + XSPC EX240, XSPC twin DDC reservoir, twin DDC, EK-Supremacy full copper, EK-supreme HF VGA Bridge edition with parallel bridge

the 3930k is running at 5Ghz with 1.5v core voltage, 1.15 for VTT and VCCSA, CPU and VCCSA LLC both "high"

the idle CPU temp = 45-53, under Prime 95 blend test, went up to 83 degree max...(average 75 degree), small FFT.... went up to 90...and blue screen

the GPU is GTX 480 SLI, default voltage, core: 800 ram: 2000 they stayed at 40 degree idle, and 55-58 degree under furmark 1920X1080

the GPU temps are acceptable, however, the CPU is running way too hot under water...... maybe i shoud l check my CPU block?

or thee 1.5v 5Ghz 3930k is crazy hot?
Check your thermal paste and make 100% sure all the trapped air is out the rad. As since it is a day old, I'm sure all the bubbles haven't left the system. Rock the pc back and forth and side to side while tapping on the rad. This will free the trapped bubbles. You can also squeeze the lines and make is surge to help trapped bubbles more.

But a 3930k is going to get really warm at 5GHz plus those 2 480's will put out some heat also. Thanks
post #3 of 9
Well, the 480s in SLI will heat stuff up but 1.5v is a lot, like a lot of voltage. The difference between 4.8Ghz and 5Ghz is miniscule, but the voltage increase is huge. Scale it back to the highest speed you can hit without going higher than 1.4-1.425v and your chip will not be leaking voltage like a sieve. Seriously, I am trying to help, because at 1.5v you will see degradation very quickly and your chip will not last very long at all.

thanks for the reply
i checked the thermal paste and reinstalled the CPU block today, they are good...

i guess maybe it's the internal O ring for the jet plate, i changed the jet plate yesterday, maybe the O ring for the jet plate is in the incorrect position? maybe i'll have to drain the system and open the CPU block to check it........

yeah, i heard about the C2 degrade faster than the C1...

i was thinking if i can maintain a low temp for the CPU under 1.5v, maybe around 65 degree max, the cpu will be good for 24/7
post #6 of 9
I don't know if the stepping has anything to do with degradation speed, as the only difference is that C2 supports VT-d... It is the same chip, and I have yet another see anyone recommend the C1 over the C2... Also, 1.5v is just a ton for the chip, regardless. It's a matter of physics, the more power you push through, the faster it wears out. The scale is not linear, either, but closer to logarithmic (1.5v will wear 2x faster than 1.4). I am not going to push mine above 1.425v, but I will spend weeks tweaking it to get the best overclock at the lowest possible voltage, as the gains above 4.6Ghz are minimal compared to the risk. Water cooling doesn't negate the damage caused by high voltage, just by high temps.

The 480s aren't active during typical prime runs, so unless OP ran furmark at the same time they're not part the equation.

These are completely normal temperatures.1.5V is too much for LGA-2011 on the long run for water cooling. Stick to ~ 1.4Vcore.
Also some chips tend to have higher current leakage than others that's why comparing with other LGA-2011 users is never a good solution and can do more harm than good.

If your TIM imprint is perfect then it's OK.

hi all,
i just disassemble the whole system today
i opened up the CPU block and found a little paint in the micro channel.. i removed it
i opened up the VGA blocks, they are fine

i turned off the Hardware Prefetcher and get it stabled at 1.475, now the temps are 5 degree lower..
