X850XT - PE Temps

Thread Starter
Im pretty sure I know the answer to this question, but I just thought I might ask for some opinions. Currently Im running a single ATI X850XT - PE Overclocked pretty good I think. Defaults are GPU 540Mhz and Memory 590MHz*2 temps under load at stock settings move up to about 65*C under full load with fan at 100% duty cycle.

Now my question is can temps hurt performance?
Overclocked shes running at GPU 594Mhz and Memory at 627Mhz*2 with these clocks the temp doesnt get too terribly much hotter than stock, usually around 68-70*C but from everything I have read these cards just run abnormally hot. Now if I push the clock speed or memory up much more than 594/627 I get alot of artifact and it destroys performance big time. I went from 6960 3dmarks on 3dmark 05, down to 6428. Could it be the heat thats causing this or some other factor? Also does anyone have any suggestions on cooling this beast?

The Artic Silencer series is GREAT for this card. Yes, stock cooling runs abnormally warm, and ~70 is as high as you'll want to go. It's more a ram heating issue though, and some ram sinks will help. As for the benchmark drop in points, it could be a number of different things causing the drop, temperature being one of them.

Yes, thats what I was thinking, but wasnt 100% sure on it. What do you think on that oc? That pretty decent for this card? Here is a screenshot at idle.

Here is a link to the 3dmark screenshot, ill dig up the full link to it if needed. but here it is.

Thats not a bad overclcok, but I think your core is just about as far as it will go without a volt mod. My x850xt could run around 600 on the core in 3d but wouldnt do more then 5 minutes in atitool, never had artifacts with it, the core just ran out of juice, my ram could do around 660 maxxed with little artifacts, I ran it at 594/642 most of time. My temps were about the sme as yours, I did lap the stock heatsink and put AS5 on the core.

BTW the card can handle alot more heat then you are talking about, Ive ran mine at 90c for about 2 hours without a hickup and I think the shut down temp is 100c, its not like a CPU.

Thats great to know, I was a bit worried about the temps, because as im sure everyone in this forums knows high temps = evil to hardware lol. Its totally stable at the current clocks, and never had a problem with it, I started getting the artifact's when I pushed it up to 620MHz on GPU and 650Mhz on memory. It also killed the performance, but I was running 3dmark when I had the artifact. Other than that I had no problems. I dropped it back down to where it is now, so that It doesnt get too hot, and stays stable with no problems.

BTW: Killer OC on that Intel, NICE!

Like Adeoliver said that card can take massive amounts of heat without any problems so I am pretty sure the heat isn't causing the problem. I ran mine at 90*C+ for hours and hours on end and the card still works fine. It is more likely a lack of voltage that is causing those artifacts so you can volt mod the card and try to get higher or just accept the overclock you have (which is a pretty good one).

For now I think im going to keep it as is, because it serves its purpose well, and I dont game tooo much to the point that I have really found a game that can really challenge it. Aside from that, I dont know much about volt mods, I know what it is, but I build somewhat on a budget, and dont wanna kill the card LOL

The stock XT-PE cooler isn't that bad. The stock X850Pro cooler on the otherhand, was complete junk. I'm using the Arctic Cooler, and it's awesome. @ 550/580 it's around 36C idle, and in the mid 50's playing FEAR. It's super quiet too.

A friend of mine has a XT/PE too and it's load temps are 92c with stock cooler. No artifacts and it's at stock speeds.

Those temps are nothing to worry about. I idle at 36 and full load after 2-3 hours of gaming is 65c
