Do these temperatures seem right? (WC'ing log now) - Page 2

Well I was a little bored so I decided to do some modifications...

I lapped my 2600k.. Second time I have lapped a cpu, I got the 2600k new for only $100 so I am not to worried about warranty, if it dies I can get a newer faster cpu for around $150 so I am not to worried. During lapping I found that my processor had a very low spot in the center area over the cores, which mite explain the improvements.

After lapping I re-installed the processor and used the very very last bit of Arctic Silver 5 I had, after running 20 loops of IBT I now get 56/59/61/59 with the same room temperature (previous 60/62/63/59). So that is a good improvement, lets see how much better I can get this after a few upgrades...

Time to overclock a bit more for the time being

Nice, certainly an improvement over your earlier set-up. Great price on the 2600k also!

I believe your original flaw was all in the tim. you went overboard with lapping, but heck such a bargain for the chip biggrin.gif
Looking good, I bet with better tim such as noctua h1 you'll get 2-3c better than as5. and lapping only make it better biggrin.gif

Yeah, it must have been the Tim.. I will be ordering better Tim soon, so I should be able to shave off a couple more degrees. The lapping is a little overkill, but it is fun to do smile.gif .

Just received my new thermal paste today. I decided to get Arctic Cooling MX-4 due to its generally excellent heat transferring ability according to all of the different reviews that I read, because it is not electrically conductive, and because it does not have a break in period. (I also bought a temperature gauge so I can get a more accurate room temperature)

Here are the results:

Arctic Cooling Silver 5
Room temperature: 27.39c
Highest temperature of cores after 10 runs of IBT: 62c/66c/68c/66c
Temperature Difference: 34.6c/38.6c/40.6c/38.6c

Arctic Cooling MX-4
Room temperature: 27.00c
Highest temperature of cores after 10 runs of IBT: 61c/66c/67c/65c
Temperature Difference: 34.0c/39.0c/40.0c/38.0

Difference between each thermal paste: -.6c/+.4c/-.6c/-.6c

So overall, not much change. I will probably try a remount soon just to be sure that it went on correctly.

**update

Re-applied the thermal paste, same temperatures as before

hmm, some reason I had much pretty results with my mx2 paste over as5, well still minor improvements and you get a piece of mind that the paste is non conductive, and no break in time.. Ttry out the noctua, I just receive my noctua paste last week and will be testing it when I tear down my loop, moving into a caselab sth10 biggrin.gif . hopefully I get you some results within 2 -3 weeks. don't hold your breath on it though. tongue.gif

to be honest, your radiator being thin and moderate fpi is holding you back in temps..
the 360 round up shows it to be "middle ot the road" and leaving some degress on the table.
cant get a real answer on the fins per inch. some say 20fpi some say 10fpi.. the one i have
is 20fpi.. which kind goes with the round up in temps.. the faster the fan the better it closes
in on the lower FPI rads in temps. so the 600-800rpm fans upto 5° warmer..
for giggles.. got any 2000rpm fans? retest with a higher cfm/rpm fan set and if
the temps drop, the rad isnt really efficeint with low speed fans.. cool enough to use, but
not cool enough to be comfortable.

You might be right airdeano, I never realized what kind of fins his rads has, and fans and rpm the op is using.

That is very interesting. I'm not an expert on water cooling but in the op I thought it was strange that he was getting those temps with a custom loop. That is a lot of great info. Thanks. biggrin.gif
