Frankly, I'm a lot more nervous about hard drives. At least with SSDs, you can more or less predict when it'll fail. With HDDs, it could be working fine one moment and dead the next.

Should I get the 830 256gb as my first SSD? Or should I go Intel? I have been eyeing the 530 series for Intel reliability, but I have read that samsungs are just as reliable or more

You mean the Intel 520? I'd go for the Samsung 830. It can generally be found on sale more often than the Intel 520, too so it's a win-win.

My first SSD was a Corsair Nova 32GB. That thing was even impressive coming from a RAID-0 HDD setup. I now have a Crucial M4 256GB in my sig rig. Almost all my systems now have an SSD in them, like an OCZ Agility 3 120GB in my HTPC, Crucial M4 128GB in my secondary rig, and Crucial M4 128GB mSATA in my laptop. SSDs are just so awesome there is no going back to regular hard drives for the boot drive.
