Change SLI 570's for 7970

Thread Starter
Right I know that the 7970 has less power than the 570 sli's slightly but its teh Vram that I'm having issues with as well.

BF3 is maxing it out on my sli setup.

Would a 7970 overclocked a bit allow me to run BF3 at ultra settings?

i can get it for the same price as a 7950 in the UK so £250.

would i see benefits from doing this?

Like 6th post down. 7970 is weak sauce, I'm sorry. Like every card, it has it's up but a majority of downs. Only thing worth it would be heat generation would be at an all time low for you. And even if it was better (which it isn't and if so barely) overlock the 570s. Saves money. The performance gain will be so minimal and disappointing. Now if you were gonna Xfire the 7970, then by all means do it to it.

Try the 8x port. Should do 3 way both.

the 7970 is not weak sauce, get real...

OP: unless you are hitting a VRAM wall it is probably not going to be worth it, i went from a pair of 6970s to a single 7970 and i lost some raw performance but there were some other benefits. Overclock the 7970 can close the gap quite a bit since it overclocks a lot. No micro stuttering, lower power consumption, no sli or crossfire driver issues.

the 7970 really shine at multi-monitors(if thats future endeavours) compared to 570's smile.gif a SLI to single card would give you less hassle in terms of compatibility.

I'm maxing Vram on BF3 the power is there in the cards to run it at ultra over 60 fps but anything more than high with any AA and HBAO on and i'm instantly over 1.25GB Vram.

I've found a 7970 for £250 which is the same price as a 7950 over here so hopefully they have a few in stock.

If so when i sell my 570's will probably buy another 7970 as well. and then I could even add a 3rd if i wanted to in the future.

A single 7970 beats the snot out of a single 570:

http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/508?vs=518

Thus a stock 7970 would come pretty close to 2x570s. Oh and it consumes less power too wheee.gif

If you are staying with a single monitor resolution then go with a single GTX 670/680. If you will be upgrading to a multi-monitor config and you dont care about PhysX or 3d go with the 7970 with possible CF.

BF3 are Nvidia 600 series cards bread and butter, and even lower end 660ti will beat a 7970 at stock speeds. http://www.anandtech.com/bench/Product/508?vs=647
