Sudden dramatic slowdown (Mid-2011 MBpro)

Thread Starter
Lately I've been experiencing a serious slowdown on one of my MBpros. Applications are slow to start, and even when they do, they end up locking up most of the time. I used to have this issue when opening FF and not having cleared the history in a long while, but that would only cause a slowdown when using FF. I haven't installed any additional applications in a while, so I'm not sure what it could be.

It's been a while, but the slowdown happens on a cold-start, even after it's been off for a few days. I'll do a diagnostic when I get home.

Any other suggestions?

Looks like you were right about the HDD failing. I was going to install Mountain Lion, and was greeted with this:

hopefully you can still hook it up to another system and pull any important data (a windows machine with "mac drive" software could work in a pinch).

By booting to my macs windows partition, I was able to pull all my data off from the Macintosh HD.

Then I managed to boot into safe mode to be absolutely sure I got it all, and I did. Did a complete reformat, updated to 10.6.8, then immediately upgraded to mountain lion from snow leopard without having to go through lion first.

Computer seems to run snappier than ever, now.

You could possibly have a failing hard drive or bad hard drive cable. OSX is very tempormental when it comes to bad blocks and starts to act very strange. I would make sure you have your data backed up and then do the following:

Restart the machine and as soon as you push the power button hold the Command and S keys at the same time. You will now boot into single user mode.

Once things are done and you are into single user mode, type the following:

fsck -fy

See if that fixes it. Keep any eye out for errors as well. If it finishes without issues, then I would do a surface scan on the drive (after backing up your data as a surface scan can kill a failing drive or make it worse).

To exit single user mode, just type reboot.

Are you still using the same hard drive as before? That is bad ju ju waiting to happen. Replace the hard drive if it was beginning the fail. You are just asking for trouble. Also be SMART and use an external drive as a Time Machine backup. Keeps you out of trouble.

It is the same drive. The windows partition always worked flawlessly, and still does. The disk itself was even determined to be healthy when I was working around with disk manager.

The slowdown dissipated relatively quickly. The hard drive error occurred when I was upgrading to Mountain Lion, the computer had been running like normal.

After searching various Mac threads, it appears others have experienced this error when upgrading their OS, specifically going from Snow Leopard to Lion.

I'm of the mindset it was a freak accident, and coincidental. However, before I put any files or programs back on, I will put it through a month of usage as it currently is.

Dude, just yank the drive out and do a surface scan. You will get your answer quickly. Just connect it to a windows machine (dones't have to mount the parititon) then grab Hiren Boot CD and run HD tune off of that. If you have even 1 bad block, replace it.
