What to upgrade.. please help

Thread Starter
Hi all,

I didnt really know where to put this, so i posted it in here... so my current rig is as follows:

Q9550 @ 3.7 ghz Stable
GTX 260 core 216 OC
Seagate 500Gb HDD
Gigabyte P45-UD3L mobo
700 watt OCZ PSU
2x2 gb g skill ram

I am looking to spend about 400-500 bucks upgrading my comp.. I definitely want to get a GTX 560 Ti.. I am also looking at upgrading a couple other components if possible.. My HDD is about 4-5 years old, and still appears to function fine, but I think its gotten slower over the years.. I would kind of like to upgrade this.. I have been told SSD is the way to go, however is it difficult to transfer all my HDD data + windows over to a new SSD??

also, what do you guys think of my CPU? Is it neccessary to upgrade if i am going witht he new video card? The Q9550 has served me well over these past couple years.. Will I notice a big differenec if i upgrade to a faster CPU?

And I would also like to buy a new case.. Mine is quite old and crappy. So any suggestions on which route to go here? Keep in mind im only trying to spend about 400-500 bucks.

Thanks
My System

i would say a new CPU and mobo just for stability. the GPU is fine but a tad bit dated. HHD's are getting cheaper so that shouldn't be a problem for money. maybe go for an Ivy Bridge CPU and a Z77 mobo. and yes you will notice a huge difference

if it was me i would buy a case,3570k,and some brand of motherboard,,,,,,the 3570k is gonna cost 250$,,with tax and warrenty,,,you should be able to find a decent motherboard and case for 250$,,,,,,but if you cant find a cheap enough case i would skip it and get a cpu and motherboard,,,thats where i would start,,,,,or you could keep your cpu and motherboard,,,your cpu is better than the AMD 965x4,,,so gaming wont be a problem,,,,,,so grab the 560 TI,,,,,but look at some of the gtx 570s,,,some of them are the same price as the 560ti ,,and all 570s have a 320 bit memory interface and 1.25gb memory,,,you might get a better deal

Where do you live ? Do you happen to have any MicroCenters nearby ? You can do quite a lot with a $500 budget as long as you spend it in the right way. What games do you play and at what resolution ? Is gaming your primary concern ? Here's what I would do with your current setup and a $500 budget. I'll assume gaming is your primary concern and that you game on a single 1080p screen.

This is a seriously powerful gpu for a single 1080 screen and a good price for that ssd. 80c per gb is not too shabby. If you're not shy about buying used parts, you could save a ton. You could score a 7870 used for $200 no problem if you look around. I wouldn't go much more powerful than that however on my gpu with that q9650 or you may start becoming cpu limited. This would really make your rig a screamer imo. That's an exceptional budget case btw. It has nice cable management and I really like the look of it as well. It's something I would be proud to own myself and is a pleasure to build in.

I'd personally buy the GPU, and a new hard drive. Maybe a WD 1TB Caviar Black? SSD's are alot faster, but cost a small fortune for 256GB and WAY more for 500GB.

The rest of the system looks Ok, 700W PSU, 4GB of ram, seems alright.

where do you plan to buy your upgrades? if you are near a microcenter you can get a i5 or an i7 bundled with motherboard. got my board for $90 after a $50 instant rebate. oh, that reminds me . . . have to mail the $15 rebate. that will bring the cost of the mobo to about 75. it is a biostar z77xe4 bundled with a $230 i7 2700K.thumb.gif

btw, my amd (office) rig opens files faster.redface.gif
