  • On your MSI AB shortcut, add -xcl at the end (so it'll look like "C:\Program Files\MSI Afterburner.exe" -xcl) (or wherever its installed to)
  • Run MSI AB, but do not reboot like it asks you to.
  • Remove that xcl from the shortcut, THEN reboot as directed.
  • Your clock limits have now been increased.
  • Save a 100% bone stock profile (say Profile 1)
  • Play around with your overclocking (make sure to set power limit to +20%).
  • Once you have a stable overclock, save that as another profile (say Profile 2)
  • Go to MSI AB settings, scroll over to "Profiles" tab. Set "2D Profile" to your stock profile. Save "3D Profile" as your overclocked profile.

This worked, much thanks.

Card tops out at 1200/1.149v.
Doesn't matter how much voltage I pump through it, the card always artifacts >1200.

1200 Mhz is a nice overclock. keep your temps as low as possible to improve your chances of hitting higher speeds.

Does it drop frames? What are GPU/VRM Temps like? Whats your fan profile look like?

I've been able to hit 1150/1600.

In Max Payne 3 for about 2 hours. (Heaven/Furmark can be stable but as soon as load an actual game like MP3 or L4D2 - it artifacts)
GPU Temp: about 74C max
VRM Temps: around 60/75C.
Fan speed hits 55% at 75C, 52% at 70C. Never hit 80C yet, but if it does fans should hit 60%.
Voltage: 1135mv (default on this XFX Core is 1050mv)

Before running fan profiles (i didnt know that was a thing) - i was hitting GPU 85C, VRM 95C with 1150mv , i think fan speed was slow at around 45% - and this was 1125/1575.

I'm wonder if i should push 1200mhz core and maybe 1650mem - i should be happy with this though.

Reason why it artifacts higher is because of temperatures. Once you pass roughly 1150 core, you start becoming temperature limited. The higher you clock it, the lower the temp needs to stay.

My card I can run 1150 on the stock cooler (reference), 1250 on my Accelero, and it'll pull 1375 stable under water (45*C load). So if you want it to clock higher....then get it colder.

As is, 1200 core at 1.15v is excellent. Mine wants 1.225v for 1200 core with the Accelero on it.

Don't forget to clock your memory up. 1600 should be a piece of cake. 1700-1800 or so is roughly where you'll top out at (watch for loss of framerates as that means error correcting is kicking in).

Fan profile and temps after 4 BF3 rounds.
I did have to bump up the voltage a notch, Crysis hard locked after 13 passes.
It was fine with everything else, but I use Crysis as my definitive stability determiner.

What are you basing your voltage off of, GPU-Z, AB, other?

I'm trying to keep whatever speed/voltage 70% will handle, much more above that and my desk starts to vibrate biggrin.gif
I've never been one to crank up the memory too far, other than for seeing 300+gb of bandwidth, I'm fine with 1500.

I usually base my voltage off what I set it to in MSI AB. I know its adjusting my voltage as per GPUz read outs, and its usually a good bit lower in GPUz. But meh, its easier to just report what I set it to, lol.

Actually yes it does.

Here's what I usually do for getting stable....

1) Adjust core speed first. Test with Crysis 1's benchmark, as that seems to give me the best results. If it artifacts, add vcore or lower temp (once you pass 1150 ish on the core, you'll need to start keeping the card colder and colder to get it stable, regardless of voltage).

2) Once core is nice and stable for I'd say 30 minutes or so in that bench, start upping memory speeds. Once your benchmark results start going down, that means your memory is throttling into ECC mode. Raise memory voltage till it fixes it and you see improvements. Repeat till it starts going into ECC mode again (bench results go down).

3) Once your core is as high as you can get it, and the memory is as high as you can get it without ECC kicking in, let it run the bench for another 30 minutes or so, to ensure its golden.

If the above all passes, follow it up with some Heaven and 3DMark11. Maybe some BF3 if you have it.

Generally artifacting is going to be the core (but not always, just usually). And generally a 7970 SHOULD reach between 1600-1800 ish on the memory fine.
