450w enough?

Thread Starter
Just wondering if a 450w psu could support a 3770k and a 7970?
There is also 1 mcp350 pump and 2 low speed fan.

I will most likely not overclock the cpu much if any at all im happy with 4ghz.

the reason im asking if a 450W psu is ok for my needs is because im looking at this psu specifically:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817256084

Im in it for the form factor.

I know its a stretch but I have been seeing mixed opinions thought the web and wanted a definitive answer.
And yes I have gone through a few calculators an everyone comes in under 450w but its pretty close lol. (peak load was used)

Thats going to be close for sure. My rig when fully loaded uses close to 400 watts at the wall and that's with the H100 and 10 fans. I think is doable but you need a really good ps.

It'll work no doubt with overclocks to boot.

Its supposedly a good psu and if its coming in under the power rating it shouldn't kill it should it?

It is a good PSU, and MrTOOSHORT is correct, you have nothing to worry about, you're fine (especially if you're not running some distributed computing app that keeps your VGA at full load for extended periods of time).

Silverstone makes awesome PSU's and the quality is definately there. XFX has a vey nice 450W PSU but its too big when i looked at the dimensions between the 2. Modular on a 450w Silverstone = Baller!

Honestly you might run into problems, a 400w psu is quite low, plus you don't want to make your power supply run 100% load 24/7.

There aren't any 550 - 650w PSU's in your size range? frown.gif

No 450w is the highest wattage I can find in the sfx form factor.

Luckily im not constrained by any specific case at the moment because im making a custom case to fix exactly what I need.
If the need really arises I may just go ahead and design the case around a normal atx psu, it will add an inch in height to the case I have designed but I think it may be worth it for better cooling (larger fan) and a better selection of psu's if mine were to ever die.

I have looked into server psu's specifically the 1u type and really liked the size but the lack of modular or even partially modular cables is a deal breaker as this system will not use many of the included cables.
