Faulty?: Corsair AX-850 W Gold PSU

Ok, I did some research on this as I was heavily suspecting the Corsair AX-850W.

I mean the temps for my overclock were good and when I look at the Prime95 log it shows no errors, but for some reason the PC would just shut-down.

PSU was mentioned more often than not as the culprit and one person's advice ran true in my case.

He noted that if the system shuts off and then you need to turn off the PSU switch and then turn it back on before you can boot the PC, then it must be a faulty PSU.

That is exactly what I have to do. I run Prime95, leave and when I come back I always find the computer off, with the case led flashing. I can't boot the PC, before I turn off and then on the switch on the power supply. I did not expect this from Corsair, but everyone suffers a lemon once in a while no matter the company.

I phoned Canada Computers and they will be testing it tonight. I will report the results tomorrow.

See my build thread (in sig) for more details.

So I took the PSU to the shop, he connected a pad to the cables and in ten seconds he determined that the power supply was performing to specs. I asked him if that gadget would be able to determine its performance at full load and he reiterated that the lines were good. He suggested I bring in the whole machine so they can determine the cause.

I was not very satisfied to say the least.

I had one Thermaltake 600W which I bought a month ago, and I'm now testing the new build with that PSU.

Let's see if the PC shuts off while testing Prime95 @4.5GHz overclock.

Half hour into Prime95, the computer shut off with the Thermaltake PSU.

However, unlike the Corsair PSU, I was able to turn on the computer, without having to power down the PSU. The computer came on right into the welcome Windows screen, and when I clicked the icon with my name, the overclocking utilities were still there and running.

Yes, I forgot to turn off the sleep mode in Windows, a real noob mistake.

But look how both the PSUs I used behaved. The Corsair would shut down the computer completely requiring a computer reboot and going into Windows after I chose to enter into it in "normal mode", while the Thermaltake actually behaved correctly by powering on right away and letting me go back into the Windows screen.

I wonder if the power saving features native to the Corsair were not working properly with the Windows power saving mode?

The behavior of your system with the AX 850 is indicative of a short and not a faulty PSU, you might have messed something up in the assembly of the system (something is shorting inside your case, check the motherboard).

I was going to take everything out and start from scratch with all parts outside the case to test for shorts. Since I would have been going all out, I was also going to remove the native CPU IHS and replace the poor Intel TIM.

But now, after I disabled the Windows "sleep mode", still using the Termaltake PSU by the way, the Prime95 testing has been smooth sailing for 4 hours now with 4.5GHz at an offset of 0.09v.

What caused the problem, it seems, is I forgot to disable Windows "sleep mode" and the Corsair PSU not coping well with that feature, suddenly shutting Windows/computer instead of letting the computer hybernate like the Thermaltake PSU.

I still intend to try my hand at a 4.6GHz and also overclocking the RAM while using the Thermaltake PSU. I don't think I will have any further problems with the Corsair PSU since I disabled the "sleep mode". If there is still a problem once I reinstall the Corsair PSU, after stable overclocks with the Thermaltake PSU, then we'll know that the Corsair has more serious problems then we thought.

from your description and considering you are using an AX, i'd suspect you have a faulty stick of RAM. quality wise, AX is about as high as you can buy in the consumer segment of the market so it's unlikely the PSU is bad. the most likely component to produce that type of problem would be a faulty RAM, or faulty HDD/SSD.

I agree that going top of the line would normally negate problems. I'm still hopeful that the Corsair AX-850W will work properly now that the Windows "sleep mode" has been disabled.

However, it does not look like any other component is to blame here.

With the Thermaltake the computer recovered properly from a hibernating state. The Corsair repeatedly failed to do so requiring a complete powering down and then powering up of the unit before I could press the boot button on the case.

Additionally, if any other component was misbehaving there is no sign of it now. With the Thermaltake, the computer ran on Prime95 Blend for 14 1/2 hours last night, completing 51 stages without a hiccup. I'm trying for 4.6GHz L2 at the same offset of 0.09v.

Conclusion is that there is nothing wrong with any of the computer components and probably that can also be said about the Corsair PSU. For some reason, the Corsair PSU had a problem recovering from the "sleep mode" state when that function was enabled. I'm just hoping that this will not be a bad omen of things to come.

Since I was almost done testing my optimal numbers for my overclocks, I decided at that point to switch from the Therlmaltake TR2 600W back to the Corsair AX-850W Gold.

The Therlmaltake TR2 600W performed beautifully while I was conducting my overclocks.

The Corsair AX-850W Gold, after having disabled the “sleep mode” in Windows, did not give me any troubles either. It has been working fine since last night without any shutdowns.

Like I said, for some reason the Corsair AX-850W Gold has trouble if a computer is set to sleep/hibernation mode where instead of bringing you back to the welcome screen/desktop like the Therlmaltake TR2 600W, the Corsair AX-850W Gold just shuts down and you have to power it off then on, before you can boot the computer. Not sure why that is. It does not bother me per say, since I don’t use the sleep/hibernation mode...

... but buyer beware!

hallo there.
i am not sure which your problem exactly was but i have a similar isssue with the same PSU.
When i play online games mostly the momment the game loads my PC suddenly shutdown( no bluescreen or something else)..this error happened even in Idle state when i was in Facebook or working on AutoCad.. I tried fully loading my rig with Crysis 3 to occur a shutdown but it worked perfectly ! i was monotoring temperatures all the time but they seem all fine .The shutdowns seems to happen just "randomly" . After each shutdown i cant turn the Pc on for some reason and i have to wait for about 30 minutes and then contiounsly turning on and off the PSU button while pressing I/O button each time untill it starts . It is getting so annoying..
