Sound Card's Effect on Performace

Not sure how they work, never had one. What kind of performance loss would I get from a decent laptop sound card? Or is there a loss?

Sound cards improve performance, they don't make it worse.

They process sounds instead of having the CPU do it.

Not all sound cards help. Just ones that do not offload processing to the CPU. If you have a 5.1 sound card that is offloading information to the cpu to be encoded then it will be worse than the onboard sound that is only processing stereo

Loss?

You would get a gain if anything. Games would also sound much better.

The PCMCIA is the effective pci slot so if you have the card there it will boost performance taking the load off the cpu as it should have an onboard sound chip

only if it is not offloading data to the cpu for signal processing. If the sound card offloads the signal to the cpu it is the same as onboard sound. if the sound card is adding effects or more channels to the mix then it will hurt the sound compared to onboard sound. If the sound card has a DSP [ digital signal processor on it then it will help performance.
