Low i5-3570k Performance (Stock)

Thread Starter
Hi overclock,

I was running some benchmarks on my graphics card and processor and noticed that my processor is really holding me back. I have the i5-3570K and figured I'd be doing very well in the benchmarks.

Here are my 3DMark Results

It's posting a physics score of 6576 and a clock speed of 3123 Mhz.

I figured I'd be running games like Guild Wars 2 flawlessly at high frame rates, but I'm averaging around ~30 and I think it's due to my processor.

Are these numbers normal? Are the other peoples' benchmarks I'm seeing with overclocked CPU's?

My i5-2500k at stock ~3.3ghz never lead to a bottleneck (but i'm on a ~GTX 560), but why haven't you tried overclocking yet? and also try monitoring your CPU and GPU usage when playing games to see where the bottleneck is?

Also if VSync is on, it sometimes caps at 30fps.

Use MSI afterburner to see GPU usage.
Use task manager to see CPU usage.
Report which is maxed out.
Also fill out your system under your profile so we can see your other components.

I haven't tried overclocking yet because overclocking CPU's seems more technical than gpus
I was planning on trying it this weekend when I have some free time.

It's really fun and addicting!
It's helpful though if you are prepared to reinstall windows if you're ocing on a new platform for the first time. If you are unstable and get BSOD's a lot, you may need to eventually restart windows.
I've gotten ~40% more performance out of my i5-2500k with a very stable overclock. Super awesome...thumb.gif
Make sure you have a good motherboard and CPU cooler first though! if you list the parts, we can help.
I'm not sure if I can link you directly to it, but try adding your rig here: http://www.overclock.net/lists/component/manage/type/RIG

Did u fiddle with your bios? Make sure turbo is enabled. My bone stock 3570K scores high 7000s like 7600-7900. Your score is abnormally low but not so much at 3100MHz as that is below default base clock of 3.4GHz

Hmm... I think it's definitely your cpu... I had my intel core i5 2500k clocked at 4.0 GHz on the intel stock cooler, and i always got a physx score of 7000+, until i got my h100 cooler 3days ago and overclocked my cpu to 4.8, now i get 8579 physx score, and my gpu score is now over 9912 with little overclocking http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/4370117

Well damn, maybe for some reason my CPU was set to a lower stock clock speed. I'm only getting 3.1gHZ and ~6400 physx score. I'll take a look tomorrow evening when I have time to do some tinkering.

Is overclocking the i5 difficult or as easy as it is with GPU's?

I do have a decent motherboard and aftermarket cooler. The asrock Extreme4, and I don't recall the brand of the cooling unit. It's weird that my stock clock speed is so low.

cwenk- this is what I score in 3DMark 11 with EVERYTHING at bone stock including graphics card and CPU

http://www.3dmark.com/3dm11/4383491

Like I said in my previous post; a highish 7000 physics score is the norm for the i5-3570K at bone stock. A mid 6000 physics score is not normal unless you've edited the bios to have it run below its default base clock which should be at 3.4GHz and with turbo enabled it should reach 3.8GHz. Don't know why yours is slated at 3.1GHz as it could be a bios misread. Some motherboards ship out with earlier bios versions that aren't fully compatible with latest 1155 Intel chips. My G1.Sniper M3 from Gigabyte apparently didn't like my 3570K until I flashed its bios to a newer version that supports Ivy Bridge processors.

something is amiss. could be a misread as Bruennis stated, but that physics score suggests to me it is not, and that for whatever reason the cpu is topping out low. My physics score is 9500 at 4.7; I dont quite recall what it was stock but I'm thinking it was 8k+. Make sure your mobo's bios is up to date, and check the Turbo and multiplier settings. As to the ease of OCing, I'm not familiar with the extreme4 but it seems to have a good phase setup so a mild OC should be as easy as changing the multiplier. Good chance you could bring it to 4.2-4.4 by literally changing the multi and not touching anything else. Easy peezy.

But clearing up that clock issue is obviously on the table first.
