Finally upgrading from 4850, roughly $200 budget. - Page 3

Damric: Would a 24" monitor really be the better choice with my old 4850 with 512mb of vram? Even if I bought a 7870 I would be able to buy a new monitor in a couple months.

Momonz: Thanks for the advice.

P3c4h2: I have been looking at benchmarks they do seem pretty close in a lot of the games I play and they overclock pretty similarly. Since the GTX660 is so new could I expect to see a notable increase in preformance after the next few driver updates?

Damn my indecisiveness! Now newegg is out of both of those cheaper 7870s. I guess if they don't get them back in stock before they end the sale on them I will just get the EVGA GTX660 otherwise I think I will go with the Asus 7870.

One more question, if when I put my old Accelero S1 Rev 2 on the 7870 will I see any improvement in overclocking over the stock cooler?

Thanks for the help everyone.

I don't think accelero S1 Rev 2 is compatible with HD 7800 cards.

http://www.arctic.ac/en/p/detail?sArticle=24.%3F

Don' bother with aftermarket cooler. get a card with a good cooler like Sapphire Dual X, His Iceq, Gigabyte Windforce . these cards can easily handle 1200+ Mhz overclocks.

I know they don't list any 7k or gt600 series cards there but after a few searches I have been able to find a few people that list 7850s and 7870s with Accelero S1 Rev 2s mounted on them in their specs on various tech forums. I already have the S1 and some copper Vram heatsinks because I had an 8600gt that had a stock cooler the size of a deck of cards (imagine the sound). I guess the worse case scenario is that I will have to stick with the stock cooler and deal with the noise (do they still sound like somewhat quiet hairdryers?). If you want to know why I keep asking about my old S1 just take a look at this picture, the room was 19c when I took this, I only have one of these cheap fans on the thing and this 4850 hit 90c with its stock cooler (it was only single slot, my other one with a dual slot cooler would hit 65c).

As for the cards you mentioned, how does their overclocking compare to the how the ASUS 7870 overclocks (core=1300mhz ram=1375mhz)? From a quick search it looks like the sapphire dual x hit 1240mhz core and 1290 to 1520mhz ram, the his iceq hit 1200mhz core and 1450mhz ram and the gigabyte windforce hit 1200mhz core and 1450mhz ram. This makes me wonder if it is really brand related or just a matter of luck.

Again, thanks for the help.

If this is for gaming, I feel a new CPU would go further. If you live near a Microcenter, you could probably get a 2500k + MB for around your budget.

hardocp has reviewed the Sapphire HD 7870 OC with dual x cooler and the Gigabyte HD 7870 Windforce

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/04/26/sapphire_hd_7870_oc_edition_video_card_review/9

http://www.hardocp.com/article/2012/06/19/gigabyte_radeon_hd_7870_oc_video_card_review/9

both cards did 1250+ Mhz . But overclocking is mostly a hit or miss thing. you might get a chip which does 1300 Mhz or you might get a chip which does not cross 1150 Mhz even with extra voltage. the sapphire cooler kept the 1.27 Ghz chip at 65c while the gigabyte cooler kep the 1.3 Ghz chip at 56c. get one of these 2 cards.

You should get the monitor now, because graphics cards can change a lot faster than monitors in just a few months in both price and performance. While an HD 4850 isn't great, it isn't horrible either and should still be enough to hold you over on a new monitor until you update your graphics card. You might have to play games on medium with limited antialiasing rolleyes.gif

Bielijbog:
I don't live near one. Are you sure that would help my preformance more? Keep in mind I will mostly be using my system for gaming, browsing the internet and gaming related things. I can't find a direct comparison but this comparison involves the i7 920 and after a quick search it sounds like it's only slightly less powerful than the 2500k (could be wrong). The review shows that while in most benchmarks the i7 920 preforms better there is almost no difference in games unless you run them at the lowest possible settings at a very low resolution. I thank you for the suggestion though, it led me to that very interesting article.

Raghu78:
Yeah I guess I will just have to hope I get lucky. I'll keep those cards in mind.

Damric:
To be hones I thought you were crazy before but now that you put it that way I think you have a very good point. Any recommendations?

It's true that graphics card change often than monitors but what kind of change are you expecting now. Both amd and nvidia released their mid range. The only change you can expect is price change. But how likely would that happen. You are suggesting a waiting game for op, which most of the wont do any good. See what happened to those sapphie 7870s

The 7870 is a budget card so the chances of it's price changing for better are not great. I wanted to recommend upgrading the monitor first (it's actually what I would do) but the most noticeable upgrade you could get it seems would actually be a new GPU.

You can't go wrong with the 7870 or the 660Ti. Just please promise us you'll upgrade the monitor next biggrin.gif!
