Task Manager Only Shows One Core...

Thread Starter
I am currently running Athlon FX-60 on Windows XP SP2 and it seems that Windows is only recognizing one core. I took a look at Device Manager/Computer, and it appears that my computer is ACPI Standard PC. I tried updating the driver, but the option for ACPI Multiprocessor PC was nonexistent. I tried to repair my Windows, but my XP Pro CD is Version 2002...

Is there anyway that I can somehow update the HAL? Do I need to get a new XP CD? Do a clean install (which is not an option at this point)? If nothing works, I guess I can just wait for Vista next year to correct this.

Any help will be appreciated. Thank you.

Have you considered slipstreaming the OS SPs.

I've installed the optimizer from AMD a while ago, but the problem is with the Power Monitor. When I try to run it, it displays a warning stating:

"Your system is equipped with multi-core processors, however, support is not enabled in your OS and/or BIOS. AMD Power Monitor cannot display information on all processor cores."

I know my mobo's compatible with dual-core processors so something's up with my OS.

Thanks for the inputs. I'll try the slipstream.

I know its a bit late now, but xp sp2 is 32 bit and will only recognise one core but show the cpu as a dual core, try running an xp x64 trial version to see if that resolves the problem.

I have XP SP2 x32 on my other rig and I'm running my AMD 4600+ X2 with no problems. Device Manager and Everest Home edition both see my CPU cores no problem. My version of windows is DAMN OLD too, *looks at it* yah well actually my windows is 2002, but could that date change once you install SP2 because I swear I got it before that.

If worse comes to worse try fresh install windows is pretty much a pain so it might just need a Repair or fresh install to see it who knows. Windows causes me so much problems, can't wait till Linux is much more of a gaming OS

I had that happend to me on my 4400 not showing 2 cores in task. I had to reinstall the cpu chip to the mobo and then look again at task manager. After I did that it shows both now...

You may want to update your BIOS if you haven't already. If you run CPU-z does it recognize it as a dual core?

According to the message it may be that cool'n'quiet or some other power management option may be off in the bios. Just cause your mobo supports dual core doesn't mean your bios is set correctly.

Yah appearently just installing Cool and Quiet will allow your Dual Core to work properly though I've never tested it because I just run full all the time. Never really seen Cool and quiet useful to me.
