cat5e (cat 5 enhanced) supports 10/100/1000 transmission speeds. i think tho for Gbe (1000) it has a lower limit on cable length supported.

Well, i do have Cat5e, and the longest cable i have is 15 mts. Hope that is enough for GbE, i'm looking to set up a NAS and i will need the bandwidth

No need for any workaround, cat 5e will work with Gigabit ethernet out of the bag.

As stated, you probably wont notice any difference between using cat 5e or cat 6 cabling unless your network as a lot of traffic (not just internet but between computers on your home network). A lot of traffic meaning something like multiple HD streams over the network while there are multiple large file transfers over the network. Probably 90% of home networks never use THAT much networking power.

As stated, you probably wont notice any difference between using cat 5e or cat 6 cabling unless your network as a lot of traffic (not just internet but between computers on your home network). A lot of traffic meaning something like multiple HD streams over the network while there are multiple large file transfers over the network. Probably 90% of home networks never use THAT much networking power.

Not to mention the standards are designed around I/C use, where there is a tray with hundreds of wires right next to each other all with traffic on them. THIS is where you gain something going up from cheap 5E to good 5E, or to cat 6, although most of those gains are to be had where it's terminated, not in the runs themselves. A single 5e wire in your house will have no difficulty passing gigabit. Heck, you can probably get by with cat5 for gigabit in a house, assuming the jacks/plugs are done with enough twist (if you throw an ancient cat5 jack on cat 6 cable, guess what, you get cat5 performance).

As for going from a good 5E or 6 to something like 6A or 7, your data technically gets there less quickly, as the propagation speeds go down the more twist there is - not that it makes a difference at 10/100/1000 rates...

Also, OP, 99% of the cat5E, 6 and 6A in the US of A is UTP, and has no shielding whatsoever.

Plus cat5e will do GbE fine (in fact I do just this myself)

we have a lot of interneting going on in my house. streaming movies surfing and gaming all at once. thats why i changed my cat5 to cat 7.'s so i should be looking for a better router instead?
could you tell me what to look for in a good router.
