940be 3 years and...almost going strong?

I've got a pretty modest, OLD (by todays standards) system
it's a 940be clocked to 3.5 on air at 1.52 volts
biostar TA790GX3 A2+
4 sticks of ocz 1066 1gb ram
two HIS HD 4830 IceQ4 (clocked to 760core 1000mem)
and a WD 1TB drive and a seagate 640 drive.

This system has been 100% ROCK SOLID ever since I put it together at the begining of '09 (even through a mishap where i bent the upper pins for the fan connector and broke a cap that i believe is for the fan)

But that all changed several months back. It began to BSOD like a mother effer. Hard drive would randomly halt accessing and lag the system till it finally decided to read again and other random performance bull. I thought it was my hard drive overheating (hitting 50c on warm days) so I added a fan. Too little too late. windows 7 became corrupt to the point the system couldn't find it.

Frustrated, I put my whole system into the closet because I had other things I had to do.

I finally dragged it out after finding one of my windows 7 discs and decided to install it. BUT...the system wouldn't even POST!

It would try to. The keyboards leds would flicker randomly then cut out, then flicker again and once again cut out (back lit keyboard)

after clearing the cmos several times and going so far as to pull out EVERYTHING except the minimum, it posted, i restored my settings, and eveyrhting was fine.

Then I come home from work to find my system wouldn't wake up. Same symptoms.

It got to the point that the system would bsod and wouldn't come back up till I managed to clear out the cmos and reboot it several times

I even got a message that the Hypertransport Bridge FAILED.

Then I remembered a handy feature of this tforce board. It has diagnostic led's. A couple times it read normal, but most of the time it was reading memory errors. *** Memory errors, after 3 years the memory has a problem? They're rated for 533mhz with 5-5-5-15-22 T2 timings, and I'm running them at 500mhz with 5-5-5-15-20 T2 timings, at 2.1 volts so I didn't think that was it. Till I ripped it all out and kept one good stick in. Booted up faster than ever like that. So I decided that 4 sticks at 500mhz must now be becoming a bit taxing on the system, or that the sticks themselves are starting to wear, so I bumped my voltage to 2.2v and now its cruisin like usual.

But really, 3 years rock solid and now the damn memory is glitching.

I don't remember exactly, but iirc the deneb chips memory controllers don't like being stuffed with 4 chips running at 533mhz do they. I think 400mhz is their happy spots when fully populated (or was that only the older phenoms?)

Either way, TL;DR 3 years of pushing this thing to the max is starting to show some cracks, but nothin a bit more voltage won't hurt!

gonna dump these cards for a HD6950 that sapphire has. Hopefully the dual bios unlock switch they have work to unlock them to hd6970 levels.

lol ya, slightly pointless post, but this is definitely the longest I've ran any rig I've owned, especially pushed to its limits like this one. 1.52v is a touch over the high side for this chip, and I'm finally seeing the limits of my graphics card. The cpu I doubt will bottle neck most games I play, but my GPU for sure are maxed out.

Lesson learned though. 3 years is a long time to be stressing out components like this. Once I finally upgrade my mobo/cpu/ram I'll give them to my girlfriend with slightly less clocks and voltages to keep it goin for a few more years.

The real problem was my case. The p182 sticks the hard drives into the bottom with the PSU, and my thermaltake has a big 140mm fan, but it sits at idle till the psu hits 60% load. My lower fan to ventilate the hard drives broke, so for the longest time I didn't have anything to help with airflow. Once I realized what was going on with the hard drive temps I shoved a spare 120 down there and the temps chill at 35c. I did find out that the operational temps of my drives are fine till 60c but you're right. 50c is cookin for a hard drive.

All seems to be ok now. I think all the over volting and over clocking has somehow destabilized the memory controller a bit, or the ram themselves, so they needed a voltage bump to make them happy again.

My ambient temps never change unless its winter. 78-80f all summer, but during cold winter nights they do dip down quite a bit.

For how much abuse this computer has been given, I'm surprised it hasn't buckled yet. My poor case is all dented up and crap cause the panels got banged up when I had them off (they managed to get stepped on, had stuff dropped on, etc) And my noctura cooler looks like its twisted a bit for some reason. My cpu fan is held on with duct tape, the wiring has become a mess, one of my hard drives cables are glued on because the connector busted, and the door no longer stays on cause one of the pegs broke. Oh, and I lost one of my filter doors in a move and I lost my filters altogether.

Hell I don't even remember what happened to my Thermaltakes extra modular cables nor the bag they came in, and I have no idea where the extra drive bay or accessories my case came with lmao.

All my **** needs to be replaced. My death adder mouse lost its click wheel, the right click is goin out, my saitek eclipse II broke its spacebar in half and its dirty as ****.

I hate moving. Every time I move something winds up getting lost or busted up.

I also talk too much.

Plans are to get an HD6950 and hopefully unlock it
then get a NEW antec case (I think its the p183 or p193 now idk)
replace the motherboard, cpu, ram, etc.

Only parts I'm going to reuse are my hard drives and my powersupply. (and every day I'm glad I dumped the 140 it cost for this thermaltake toughpower 850.

lmao I still have my be-2400 chip that I bought 4 years ago, and my 9600gt that I bought when I was forced to jump platform from socket 754.

This little rig I've got could easily last me another 3 or more years just by popping in a new video card. The only thing that'll really make me upgrade it will be if it smokes out.

I'm so out of the PC Building game that I didn't even realize that the 7xxx series cards were out! Last thing I remember was when the 5xxx series came out. I'm still running my 4830 sli setup (though they run more like overclocked 4850's)

I have NO idea *** cpu's amd has anymore or how they compare to the deneb chips, but as far as I know, my 940be should still be fine for a bit longer. I don't play too many new games and the only reason why I want to upgrade my card is because some games don't scale with Crossfire too well (and a couple don't even take advantage of it)

If you can find a 960T grab it,you will be amazed at the difference over a C2 940. As for the GPU,forget the 6950.Grab a 7850 or 7870 and you will be set for years.
