Newb needs help with media/server

Thread Starter
I am a newb with servers. I have an older dual core 775 chipped computer not sure the chip yet it's a 2.0 or higher. It's got 4 gigs of ddr2. I am going to buy a raid card and probably run raid 5-maybe 6. I am going to be using it for streaming all my movies and music, and also backing up my computers. I have all windows computers and andriod phones. I want to share inbetween all devices and be able to access outside of my network(vpn). I like microsoft 2011 but I run all my music through itunes currently and would like to keep that but as far as I know you can't on a windows server, what other os's would you recommend? Another question I would like to keep it as cheap as possible other than the HD's which I know are going to add up maybe run a jbod. any thing I need that I'm not thinking of?

Thanks for the help

1. Raid is much better then jbod
2.your plan sounds fine to me.
3. Have you ever used linux/unix? Filesystems like btrfs and zfs are much better then windows ntfs. If your pretty good at it, I would say freebsd, other wise, debian gnu/kfreebsd (debian but with the freebsd kernal)

the web site sucks. you mind filling us in a little more? it says you need a fedora live dvd. can't imagine what for; un less it runs on top of fedora. is it linux based? I would definitely recommend going with a unix based solution unless your willing to get FUSE working on linux. zfs is the best. I will never build a home server without zfs again.

Then to you I recommend pc-bsd. to use zfs you will need to learn some, but getting the basics up and running in pc-bsd couldn't be easyer
