And Insan1tyOne you could try reducing the CPU/NB voltage and frequency so the chip is cooler (seen as CPUNB doesn't impact performance massively), and upping the vcore slightly for a better core clock? This is what I used to do when I had a small heatsink, reduce other voltages so I can increase the vcore. Reducing the CPU/NB voltage really does make a difference to heat.
By the way does anyone know what other settings may drop frequencies and voltage for "power saving". I've disabled all the necessary power saving options, APM, core c6 state, cool n quiet, C1E, amd turbo core etc, but still. Sorry not trying to hjack this thread just a quick question if anyone knows rather than making a new thread.

No problem, might as well get all questions answered here so it is a more helpful thread to future viewers! wink.gif And I might have to try that. My Hyper n-520 just isn't doing it for me I guess.

Your board is the 970A-D3 yeah?

I wonder why my ASUS M5A97 PRO can't reach high overclocks with low voltages. I use same board really as MrPerforations.

The lowest stable 4Ghz overclock I have achieved so far is the vcore being at 1.344/1.354. Which in my view is pretty high.

Think its a good idea to sell my FX and buy it back? Maybe get lucky with a better chip for OC?

970 chipset can't be the issue because you managed it on a 4+1 phase which is impressive.

General Pics of what keeps my VRMs nice and icy even on a 4+1 phase board:

Shout-out to Enzo-Tech for their awesome copper heatsinks.

Yes, my board is indeed the GA-970A-D3. wink.gif And even though there is a slight chance you got a lame chip, I wouldn't re-sell it just because it wants a few extra volts. More than likely it's your mobo. Do you have it updated to the latest bios? I've heard that older bios on the AM3+ boards aren't very friendly towards bulldozer. When I first got my board it would barely accept the processor (wouldn't run games etc.) until I updated my motherboards bios to the latest version. redface.gif

This is your mobo correct: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131767

Nice biggrin.gif similar layout to mine with the fans. What temperature they get to?

And no, mines the M5A97 PRO, the M5A97 has 4+2 phase if I remember, mine has 6+2 digi+vrm (some asus "special" feature supposely to give you a great OC experience...)

My BIOS is latest checked today.

Problem is they say don' t go over 1.4 for 24/7 use, but to get even 4.2Ghz OC I have to push for 1.404 vcore.

Yeah could be the mobo but then the M5A99X evo does pretty well (aka mine but with the 990x chipset).

The board has all the options to make a great OC, but they don't make a difference. You can get the VRMs to respond quicker, provide extra power support for the chip etc etc just doesn't do much for oc unfotrtunately frown.gif

1.404v? That's a great voltage for 4.2 Ghz+. And actually the correct version is, they say not to go over 1.4-1.5v for 24/7. But as long as you aren't exceeding 1.5v the only thing you have to watch out for is the temp. Don't ever let bulldozer over 60C, that's the big no-no here. And much obliged on the compliments. tongue.gif

Oh is it, thanks! Didn't know that was decent I always assumed you could achieve that kind of OC <1.35

My temperatures are good, so in that case I may as well bump the voltage up because I have achieved 4.7Ghz before (voltage was 1.5 though, not exactly stable). So fingers crossed I can get a fairly stable 4.4Ghz OC.

Be good to see how far you could push yours on that board with such low voltages. I may as well have gone for the Gigabyte 970A-UD3 or the MSI 990XA-GD55 for overclocking tongue.gif

You did yourself a favor by steering clear of the GD55. The very first 8+2 phase failure was the 990XA-GD65 biggrin.gif

i dont think its the board in general that is the problem, mabe just your board (that is if the board is actually the problem). i have an asus m5a97 board in my wifes rig and i had no problem getting the fx-4100 to 4.2GHz right out of the box. i ran it like that for months and then decided to bring it down to 3.8GHz when my ac went out and i still havent put it back. i guess she doesnt really have a need for an overclock.

Really? Thought MSI revised the VRMs for the 900 series? Thanks for that guess I won't go near it tongue.gif

And this is my second M5A97 PRO, the first one couldn't overclock good, had to RMA it because the RAM slots failed. This second one is the same but got to RMA it because I think a transistor has gone on it to control the fans.

Could be my chip that requires a bit more voltage. I will probably go for Vishera, may not be that much better but fingers crossed it'll OC better smile.gif

Not entirely. The 970A-G46 was, for example, just as failure-prone as the 870A-G45/54.
