There really are no options in the Pegatron bios. Voltage, C&Q, basically nothing can be changed except the time and date.

You should still be able to use CrystalCPUID, even on OEM boards. At least I was able to on my fileserver's ECS OEM board.

However, if you can't even disable C&Q in the BIOS, then that may be an issue...unless there's some way to block it via Windows. (I know how to for XP, but not for Vista/Win7)

At the very least I'm interested in how effective undervolting truly is. As much as I love it, I've never really paid THAT much attention to exactly how much it drops your temps.

Not quite - I'm using Vista here, and I don't think cool n quiet is enabled in Vista, which has its own system for what cool n quiet does. The cpu figures I gave you refer to the load as measured using cpu thermometer .

I understand your suggestion, but as I said it's not something I plan to do. But please report back on your tests, and perhaps also reduce the fan speed to 600 rpm.

Ok, you guys got me. With fan speed at ~700rpm, the difference in temps from 1.275v to 1.025v was only 3 degrees Celsius at load. If I do the same thing again but at 1GHz and between 1.275v and 0.775v, the difference is only 1 degree Celsius.

But here's the weird part, the difference between 2.3GHz @ 1.275v and 1GHz @ 1.275v was 15 degrees.

I say weird because supposedly clockrate frequency increases power consumption linearly while voltage increases it exponentially, and normally power consumption = heat. Theoretically this should have the results being the reverse of what I got - changing the voltage having a large difference while changing the frequency having a smaller difference.

So I have a hypothesis - that applies to heat OUTPUT, AKA how much it heats up the room, not the temperature of the actual cores. In particular, lowering the CPU voltage DRASTICALLY lowers power consumption, easily more than half as much. Using this power supply calculator:

My 65w CPU at 0.775v should be consuming only 35% of the power it would consume at 1.275v while 1GHz @ 1.275v should be around 45% of the power of 2.3GHz @ 1.275v.

This is similar to how Ivy Bridge runs hotter than Sandy Bridge even though Ivy outputs less heat and consumes less power. Just like Ivy was, Brisbane is a dieshrink of the architecture that came before it - Windsor. This would also explain why my room felt considerably hotter back when I was using a 89w 90nm Manchester this May, even though the core temps were only around 5c more than they currently are at the same settings. For reference, G2 Brisbane was only the second stepping on 65nm; Manchester however was the sixth stepping on 90nm.

Off Topic: Well ivy bridge runs hotter due to crappy tim instead of solder and of course finally running hotter and out putting heat are two different things. Also I do understand the TIM doesn't make as big a difference on some ivy bridges. Though i would argue on those ivy bridges after longer period of time they would get hotter as the internal TIM degrades.

Hi still having issues then? No offence buddy but i have to say i'm not sure what exactly what you would like to achieve. If you just want your CPU to run cooler you will have to either put up with the higher speed fan or undervolt/underclock. What do you use the PC for is it mainly HTPC? Why don't you fill out a sig so we can see ALL the parts in your rig and better help perhaps. As for the problem i had an OEM MoBo in a HP (Intel Pentium 4) that did a similar thing. When i used an AVC fan it ran upto a stupid loud RPM and when i swapped it for a 3 pin fan from an AMD heatsink it didn't max the fan out!

I just put it down to "one of those things" it didn't have any options to control fan RPM etc. You could purchase a fan controller maybe so you could adjust the fan to suit the load on the PC. When you use the rig what sort of temps are you seeing? (not stress testing just day to day stuff). I understand what you are saying about a 45w CPU still can generate a good heat load BUT if you are using a heatsink from say a 125w Phenom II it should have NO PROBLEM keeping a 45w CPU safe. What thermal paste did you use and how did you apply it (method). Not trying to come across as a...... But if you just want to know WHY it is happening well you might never find out!! Better to just solve the issue wouldn't you say:D.

So, uh... in other news, do you know if the 120mm fan keeps your CPU cool enough to actually take off the AVC fan, or is the 120mm fan not directly above/infront of the CPU heatsink?

Nintendo, possibly. The arrangement, here, again:

As you know this wasn't my area of investigation here, besides which, the 12cm fan runs off the power supply and won't run off the 3 pin cpu socket, and there is no 'halt on' to disable in the bios, so I can't test this, or else I of course would. - PS actually I have already tested this (just the 12cm fan blowing onto a dormant heatsink cpu fan), seemed to cool fine. But I haven't tested this for any duration, because of the lack of halt on control, for regular use.

As things stand, my judgement is that, the AVC at 600ish rpm alone is fine except for continuous mid/high load use, in which case its probably best to plug in the second fan.
