[MR] Confusion Over Free Lightning to 30-Pin Adapter with iPhone 5 as Apple Errs in Online Store.

As noted by iPhoneinCanada.ca soon after pre-orders for the iPhone 5 went live earlier today, Apple's online store in several countries appeared to be noting that the company's Lightning to 30-pin Adapter would be included with customers' orders free of charge. The disclosure came in the form of an option to add an "additional" adapter as an accessory.

Your iPhone includes a Lightning to 30-pin Adapter for connecting 30-pin accessories to devices featuring the Lightning connector. Purchase this additional adapter to have a second adapter for your home or office.

Customers were only presented with the option to add the cable-equipped adapter and not the direct-plug adapter, and Apple's "What's in the box" documentation did not list the adapter as included, leading to considerable customer confusion.

After initially reporting on the inclusion of the free adapter, The Next Web followed up by asking Apple's online sales representatives about the issue. According to sales staff, the listing was an error in the Apple online store, and the adapter is not being included standard with iPhone orders. Apple has also removed listing from its store pages and no longer mentions the adapter's inclusion.

Apple's adapters are available for standalone purchase at $29 for the direct-plug version and $39 for the cable version, but they will not ship until next month.

In my opinion, this doesn't surprise me one bit from Apple. Another way to screw over their consumer imo. They should have included at least one adapter in the box. People are pretty upset over the move. Read some comments. People will say why would they give away one for free, when they can sell them and make profit. At $29 a pop and lets use 1M iP5 sold, that's $29M in sales on a stupid accessory that will be soon available on ebay for $5 bucks. What a bad move.

Here are a few comments left from people:
Quote:
One adapter needs to be included. I understand this a shift every company usually takes, but $30 is quite pricey.
Quote:
Judas what a bunch of freakin cheapskates! I bet this thing costs Apple a penny for 5. I'm getting really sick of Apple nickle and dime'ing us for every little thing.
Quote:
They should have included one as a goodwill gesture.
But then again hardly gonna entice people to adopt a new standard if they have a free adapter to use old gear.
Quote:
Sorry, but count me as one who feels shafted by this as being greed; as we ALL need at least one of these to conform to our current apple ecosystem.
Nobody who owns a iOS device (i bet), will be able to survive without this adapter that is Overpriced. 9.99, ok- 30- pisses me off.

I have been a loyal Apple customer and everything in my house has the 30 pin... I will need more than one adapter as I really don't want to tote one all over the house and in my car.... for them not to include the first one on them is crooked!!!! Instead of upgrading my iPhone 4 to 5... makes me want to look for other options out there!!!
Bad form APPLE!!!

All I heard was, wah wah wah, cry cry cry, I want free stuff.

People just feel way too entitled these days. Why should Apple throw money down the toilet by including adapters that some people may not even need or use?

I agree that $29 is highway robbery, but I don't think anyone should EXPECT anything for free.

Seriously? Overreact much? I'll probably just plug my new charger in by my bed and call it a day.

Well first of all they change the connector when they could have easily kept the 30pin. Maybe they changed the connector because they were paying royalty fees to Motorola for the use of the 30pin idk. But when you are ordering a product and at first it says you ARE receiving a free adapter then they change their mind because they can profit from people buying them is made business. I don't think people are overreacting at all. Everyone that has a car/home accessory for the iphone is going to have to buy one. imo they should have included at least one. You never know maybe Apple will change there decision like when they gave out free bumpers/case!!!

Seriously? Overreact much? I'll probably just plug my new charger in by my bed and call it a day.

So if you went out and bought an iPhone dock, an iPhone/iPod stereo or alarm clock cradle, a car adaptor, an iPhone/iPod enabled car, iPhone/iPod wall chargers, and whatever other accessories you may have, you should be forced to either re-buy them all or buy a $40 adapter than probably costs them all of $0.10 to make? That's just corporate greed and typical Apple shafting you for the basic things that should come with your device. There should be at least one adapter that comes with it and there is no reason whatsoever that the adapter should cost more than $15 on the high end.

If you went out and bought all that junk then I'd think you were an idiot regardless, lol. I just don't see why Apple should worry about your accessories like your Sony iphone alarm radio, or why you feel like you're entitled to anything free? You won't be forced to spend $40 for long, then you can just let the market bear out what they're worth.

I believe there's more going on in the lightning to 30 pin than just a new pinout, some active electronics which will drive up the cost a bit. Like I said, probably not a wise business move to just eat the cost on a lot of adapters that some people may not care about. I've got Airplay anyway, who needs a stinking cable tongue.gif

I'll be sure to let your car dealership know that you won't be needing tires or a passenger seat with your next car, since we can't be sure you'll use either and you would clearly be happy buying your own if needed.

Solution -
3rd party creates a low profile converter which costs ~$5 which can be plugged onto the new iCrap so all your old iWank can work with it.
