Mini tower build suggestions

Thread Starter
So this will be my 3rd build for myself, the first was a Q9400 in a coolermaster cm690 and the second was an i2500k in a fractal core 3000. Both were great but I've since decided that a mid tower is just too big.

Goals:
## Play play skyrim, bf3, whatever, on max settings at 1920x1080
## Run 1 or 2 virtual servers 24/7
## Fit in a mini tower case
## As quiet as possible

Budget $1200, before water cooling loop, if someone ever makes a block for the 660ti.

PCPartPicker part list / Price breakdown by merchant / Benchmarks

Motherboard: MSI H77MA-G43 Micro ATX LGA1155 Motherboard ($87.86 @ NCIX US)
Memory: Mushkin Blackline 16GB (4 x 4GB) DDR3-1600 Memory ($104.99 @ Newegg)
Storage: Western Digital Scorpio Black 320GB 2.5" 7200RPM Internal Hard Drive ($58.99 @ SuperBiiz)
Storage: Samsung 830 Series 128GB 2.5" Solid State Disk ($93.99 @ Newegg)
Video Card: EVGA GeForce GTX 660 Ti 2GB Video Card ($289.99 @ NCIX US)
Case: Fractal Design Define Mini MicroATX Mini Tower Case ($94.98 @ NCIX US)
Power Supply: Corsair Professional Gold 650W 80 PLUS Gold Certified ATX12V / EPS12V Power Supply ($140.98 @ Newegg)
Other: Intel Xeon E3-1230 v2 ($233.99)
Other: AMS DS-524SSBK 2.5" x4 SATA Backplane Module ($57.99)
Total: $1163.76

My plan so far is to remove the hard drive trays and put the radiator and pump there, hence the AMS backplane module. Also the E3-1230 v2 seemed like a better way to go, same price as an i5 but almost as fast as the 3770, and yes I know it can't be OC'd. tongue.gif

Just looking for some opinions or suggestions before I start spending money. thumb.gif

Can you salvage more parts from your i5 build? I would just move your i5 build into a smaller case.

Gotcha.

I really can't help you much because I don't know a lot about xeon chips. I can tell you that I am not 100 positive that xeon chips will work in h77 boards. I know in some z77 boards they will, so maybe an asrock extreme 4 M might work better for you, but like I said, I really don't know.

I know you can get some samsung memory for a lot cheaper then that mushkin stuff and you can clock it a lot higher than it too.

And I know that you can go with http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817151088 this PSU and it will save you 10 bucks for essentially the same PSU.

Good SSD thumb.gif

Newegg is having a sale on the GTX 670 windforce edition card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814125423 . After the coupon code, the card is 360 bucks. Now I know that is a bit above your 660ti price point, but you would get a much better card. If that is simply too high, then use part picker to find your a GTX 660ti zotac amp edition and get that.

Case: I know this is a personal choice, but If I were you I would grab the bitfenix outlaw case. Here is why...

18.90" x 7.87" x 16.93" ((core 3000)) = 2518^3"
Trying to find a smaller case than this.

19.29" x 8.27" x 15.55" ((define mini)) = 2481^3"
95 dollars for only about a 40 cubic inch decrease

17.24" x 7.09" x 18.82" ((Bitfenix outlaw)) = 2300^3"
60 bucks after shipping and you can still fit a standard ATX mobo in it while having a 218 cubic inch deduction from the core 3000 case and a 181 cubic inch deduction from your original choice.

16.00" x 7.00" x 16.60" ((NZXT vulcan)) = 1850^3"
80 bucks after shipping and you will only be able to install mATX mobos, but it is the smallest case with a 600+ cubic inch deduction from your original case and your first choice replacement.

While the bitfenix outlaw is shorter and narrower than the define mini, it is longer. However, you would save 30+ bucks and you could still fit regular ATX mobos so you won't be limited as you are with the vulcan. If you just want to go as small as you can without getting a crappy case, the vulcan would be your best bet.
