What should I look for in a receiver?

In the next few month I'm going to buy some nicer speakers then what I have right now (klipsch promedia 2.1). I use these 90% for music, tad bit of gaming/general use.
For now I'm looking to get a receiver so I can use my speakers with my desktop and tv since theyre in the same room. I'm not sure what to get though.
Since this is just for my room, not a big living room or anything, i probably won't be buying very big speakers, so what kind of power rating should I look for in a receiver...25wpc, 50, 100??? Also what names are good/bad? I'm probably gonna just try to get a decent used one off craigslist or something to save some money. As for my future purchase of speakers/sub I probably wanna keep it around $500 or less, so I'm not really sure how good of a receiver I will need or how much i should look to spend on it.

Also side question. Will an audio card still be required/recommended if im using a receiver or does it take place of it?

Thanks for all the help guys

Look for low distortion ratings for the amplifier. Look for features you may want/need like Audessy. Look for inputs/outputs you'll need/want.

Look at Denon, Yamaha, Marantz, Pioneer and Onkyo.

After that just look at reviews and compare.

Is the Denon AVR-1312 for $130 good?

I'll voice my opinion. I think that I receiver in the price range of the 1312 will work, but I'm not expecting quality. At this price point i'd be more concerned with quality than with wattage ratings or even features. You say this is for 90% music. IMO, I'd look on craigslist for an old model that is higher up the ladder.

I'd decide on what options or features are a must have.

Do you need hdmi?
Do you need HD audio decoding?
Does it have to be a multi channel avr?
Do you need a remote?
Things like this...

It'd be between finding a really old stereo unit, which might lack pretty much any type of technological feature or just an older AVR. I've seen older AVR's for around $200 on CL. They're usually higher model units that just lack today's features. I still use a Denon 3803 in my home theater system. I also have a low model denon in my bedroom and I think it's mediocre. I had one of those old 80's stereo's with an analog dial before it. I made the trade off between convenience and features, but the oldie had much better sound quality.

Now that I've had a little more time to think about it, I don't really care about hdmi/hd video, just music capabilities. I'd like something around the $150 range or so that will give me the best music quality for my money. I'd like 4.1 or 5.1 channels. Remote is not too important, but would be nice if its there.

I've found a couple ones on my local CL based on simca's recommend brand name list.
AVR-2106 -$200
AVR-3803/1083 - $199
yamaha HTR-5860 - $100
Onkyo TX-SR600 - $100
Onkyo TX-SR702 - $175
Yamaha RX V430 - asking for offers

I do live in a small city so my options for used are unfortunately pretty limited frown.gif either this oe what I can find on ebay. I checked through the specs of all the ones I listed here and they all seem pretty decent (fit my criteria), but at the end of the day I just want something that will give me the best quality.

Thanks for all your help guys

The yamaha HTR-5860 looks pretty good for $100. I'd say it's comparable to that SR702, but $75 cheaper. Both are 06' model year units it seems. The 3803 is older than the rest, probably about the same age as the SR600. I don't really think you can ask for much more at that price range.
