JSON Parser

post #1 of 11
Thread Starter
Hey Guys,

Need to convert some JSON to CSV

Tried all the online offerings, no good...

Let me know how you do it, I'd be especially interested in any scripts you have.
I'm good with Java, Python and PHP (and a few others)

This is for work and we use Windows, but I'm fluent in Linux too and I have some Linux boxes at home so feel free to offer Windows/*nix solutions, it doesn't matter.

Thanks.

Use Python. It has an amazing built in json parsing module. You just treat it exactly how it looks. Here is some sample code.
Code:
import urllib2
import json

"""Suppose our JSON looks like the following:

{
    "employees": [
        { "firstName":"John" , "lastName":"Doe" },
        { "firstName":"Anna" , "lastName":"Smith" },
        { "firstName":"Peter" , "lastName":"Jones" }
    ]
}
"""

def main():
    url = 'some URL'

    request = urllib2.urlopen(url)

    data = json.load(request)

    request.close()

    # this prints the entire JSON array
    print data

    # if we want to target just the first names
    # iterate through the employees
    for employee in data['employees']:
        # print the entire dictionary
        # print employee

        # retrieving a specific value is just like using a dictionary
        print employee['firstName']

Let me know if the code doesn't make any sense in any part.

 * Converts to and from JSON format.
 *
 * JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data-interchange
 * format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines
 * to parse and generate. It is based on a subset of the JavaScript
 * Programming Language, Standard ECMA-262 3rd Edition - December 1999.
 * This feature can also be found in Python. JSON is a text format that is
 * completely language independent but uses conventions that are familiar
 * to programmers of the C-family of languages, including C, C++, C#, Java,
 * JavaScript, Perl, TCL, and many others. These properties make JSON an
 * ideal data-interchange language.
 *
 * This package provides a simple encoder and decoder for JSON notation. It
 * is intended for use with client-side Javascript applications that make
 * use of HTTPRequest to perform server communication functions - data can
 * be encoded into JSON notation for use in a client-side javascript, or
 * decoded from incoming Javascript requests. JSON format is native to
 * Javascript, and can be directly eval()'ed with no further parsing
 * overhead
 *
 * All strings should be in ASCII or UTF-8 format!

Usage:
Code:
$json = new classJsonServices();
var_dump( $json->jsonDecode( "my json data", TRUE ) );

In order to create a CSV file, you can use the PHP fputcsv() function which takes a file handle and the array returned from your jsonDecode.

Nice,

I'm gonna try the Python route first, then the PHP. Gonna take a look later tonight.

Thanks a lot though mate, I'll hit you up if I have issues

PS: Thanks to Bassdoken too, +REP for both

    "employees": [
        { "firstName":"John" , "lastName":"Doe" },
        { "firstName":"Anna" , "lastName":"Smith" },
        { "firstName":"Peter" , "lastName":"Jones" }
    ]
}
"""
def main():
    url = 'some URL'
    request = urllib2.urlopen(url)

    data = json.load(request)
    request.close()
    # this prints the entire JSON array
    print data
    # if we want to target just the first names
    # iterate through the employees
    for employee in data['employees']:
        # print the entire dictionary
        # print employee
        # retrieving a specific value is just like using a dictionary
        print employee['firstName']
Let me know if the code doesn't make any sense in any part.

That code reads in a JSON file and prints it just fine, but I need to convert it to a CSV
I'm gonna work on this myself tonight, but if you have an answer ready to go I'd love for you to save me some time smile.gif

Sure thing smile.gif

I guess the advantage with PHP is that it has both built in JSON parsing + CVS creation (although I provided a hand-rolled JSON parser just in case your PHP version doesn't support native JSON).
Although either will be up to the task (PHP + Python).

Good luck! thumb.gif
