Hot Prescott............

Everyone knows this cpu runs hot but what is a safe limit ? In BF2 I run sometimes up to 61deg. I use Artic Silver and my sorry TT Bigwater with the radiator fan wide open. When I'm just surfing I run at 43 to 45. Idle is at 38. Should I lap, would it make much of a difference ?

Yes lapp it. Typically prescotts are rated "safe" up to 65c. Though its well reccomended to keep it under 60c if possible.

Lapping both the water block and the IHS will really help. Upgrading the bigwater would be good too. Such as getting a dual 120mm rad, and a better pump, such as the D5, or even the D4 if you can find one used like i did.

For now, make sure that the rad. is clean, and if possible make a shroud for the fan on it so it sits about 1.5" away from the fins. This will maximize fan efficiency and air flow over the radiator fins.

I think that Prescotts have a limit of about 70C, but if you're pumping Vcore, i'd keep it under 60.

Ha Ha Ha, your quote is too funny. Is it for real?

I don't jack up anything now, I use too but I'm trying to keep my temps down

as much as possible. What ever else I do to this rig needs to be cheap

'cause I'm soon to build a new one.
Cheap... Lapp the water block and IHS. It should drop temps by atleast a few degrees. Probably the cheapest uprgrade to cooling. You can get most of the needed sand paperat your local automotive store.

...tore down my rig to see what was up with the high temps. It didn't take too long to see what was going on.

clogged water block and lines plus my rad looked bad too. It's been 10 months last time I did a good cleaning job.

not much coolant getting past here huh?

I didn't lap my block but I cleaned it up real good and put a thin coat of Artic Silver 5 and put every thing back together.

I mixed about an ounce of Water Wetter to 12 ounces of distilled water and filled it up.

Before I had like 38/42 idle 56/62 load temps with PSU fans and rad fan wide open (loud). Now fans are all the way down with 37/38 while I'm on the web and 49/52 at load playing BF2 with fans at half way.
Now I can take my ear plugs out!

Yuck, yeah, those lines are small enough (probably makes it easier to clog).....bet you'll be cleaning it out more often now huh?

Good news on the fix
