You could argue they released the 7 series to match Windows 7.
And the 6 series was named such because AMD are EVIL!

I'm actually surprised Nv didn't release a GTX 666Ti. That would have just been awesome.

No surprise really... as AMD's devil edition is a HD7990. wink.gif

So I am pretty noobish when it comes to gpu's as far as looking at specs and relating it to performance. Is it fairly safe to assume that one 8950/8970 will out perform a 6870 c.f. by a considerable margin? I am trying to hold out for next gen cards as getting a 7970 is similar performance other than vram.

Having so many cards be a GTX 560 (SE, normal, TI, TI 448 core) is more confusing. AMD started doing it with GHz edition cards thumbsdownsmileyanim.gif
AMD's was better.

at least Ghz tells you something about the card; it runs at 1Ghz.

AMD's was better.

But the GHz Edition cards aren't actually any different from the other cards. Hell, the only card that has both a vanilla and GHz version is the 7970 anyway -- there's no vanilla 7770 or 7870. Plus as KyadCK said at least the cards run at 1GHz; "SE" and "Ti" tell you nothing about a card

Fair point, I was just bashing pointless suffix naming schemes in general. I still prefer AMD's, even if it is just because GHz Edition denotes a specification (that really doesn't need to be noted) rather than having no meaning at all. You have to look at the specs to know what SE or TI means. Not that it is a big deal or anything.

You know why this is interesting to me? It's pretty likely that the GPUs in the PS4 and 720 will end up being some variation of the 8850 referenced in this article. Or at least something close to it if the rumors about AMD supplying the GPUs for both is true. It'll likely be cutdown a bit but it won't have the board overhead a PC gpu has and will likely fit nicely within a console's TDP budget.

It will also produce really fantastic results in a closed enviroment. Heck a 7850 would produce fantastic results.
