Ati 7970 3GB vs GTX 680 4GB

Thread Starter
I am going to have a 2x 27" 2560x1440px monitor setup which I will use primarily for web development, programming etc. However I also intend to use them to play DotA and regularly high quality and graphic intensive single player games that pop up each year (e.g. Skyrim).

Is the GTX card worth the textra $100 or will I see no difference in the gaming situation with the few extra mhz and extra 1GB memory?

Gaming at 1440P I would say you wouldn't see a noticeable difference for how much more you're paying.

At that kind of a resolution, especially if you'll end up running 3x 2560x1440 monitors (for gaming in Eyefinity / Surround), you'll want the 7970. The 7970 starts pulling ahead of the 680 at resolutions over 1080p (both cards overclocked). Plus you're saving $100+ at the very least.

I have the one 7970 (thank you derickwm <3), and it treats me so incredibly well at 2560x1600, even at stock GHz speeds. I have zero troubles maxing out nearly every game I throw at it, the ones I can't are Metro2033 and BF3, both of which is simply losing MSAA in favor of FXAA.

To be honest, the differences I'm talking about between the two cards are minimal, like 1-5 FPS at most. But still, the 7970 is still the stronger card at a higher resolution regardless (so long as both cards are overclocked). It may not be MUCH stronger, but its certainly worth saving $100+ on, and still having faster performance.

Also I hope you're planning on a whole system upgrade as that 775 processor is going to bottleneck a 7970 at that resolution.

Actually his 32bit OS is going to be the biggest obstacle seeing as how 32bit can only utilize 4GB of address space, and he's got a 4GB GPU (or 3GB if the 7970), 2GB of system RAM, and however much his BIOS wants (usually around 640MB or so). That's almost 8-9GB worth of addressable space that he's going to require, on an OS that can only give out 4GB.

You definitely SHOULD be looking at an entire system overhaul though. The Q6600 is a solid enough CPU, and it'll do okay. But in any games that utilize CPU power, that Q6600 is going to show its age.

On a hd7970 ghz edition you can take it to 1200mhz core with slight voltage tweaking and yah that does increase performence.

One thing to say: Memory Bandwidth.

Even though, I have hard time with their drivers with my setup.

If you want single screen and single GPU, please get a Nvidia Gtx 680 4GB.

But for multimonitors (especially 1440p) you want some 7970s.
