best cpu cooler for my new build?

post #1 of 7
Thread Starter
Hi,

I'm putting together a new pc but can't deside on the cpu cooler.
A few details:
-case is a Aerocool XPredator black edition
-Asus Maximus V Formula
-I7 3770k (plan to oc it as high as the cooler will allow me)
-corsair 8gb 1866mhz

As the title says, I'm looking for the best cpu cooler to put in it.
So far I've looked at the following coolers:
-Noctua NH-D14, Thermalright Silver Arrow, both good coolers it seems, but ugly smile.gif
-Dark Rock Pro 2, better looking then previous 2 but seems it doesn't perform as good as them, also don't know if i'll get problems fitting it due to the memory (could be to high to fit this cooler , don't know)
-Scythe Mine 2, imo best looking of these 4 but again less performance :/

Another thing is, since i'm putting a 200mm fan in the side panel, would I have enough room left to fit such a big cooler?

Any advice is welcome. if I can't have an excellent cooler which is also good looking then I'll problably take the better performing one, as long as I'll be able to fit it smile.gif.

Best regards.

The NH-D14 is the best air cooler out right now (Or so I think... I don't really keep up with hardware news unless it's regarded processors and GPUS). You can just paint the fans if you'd like, that's what most people who don't like the poop brown colour are doing. Also you should just check the specs of the NH-D14 to see if it can fit in your case. I'm not sure if your case supports it but you can also try the Corsair H100 if you have room for it at the top of your case.

Edit: Apparently the Phanteks is better than the NH-D14. My bad.

The Phanteks [stupid code name here] dual-tower 140mm cooler actually outperforms it, as does the Silver Arrow. The margins are slight and even slighter when you use the same fans. As the Silver Arrow is cheapest, that would be my choice.

Mount two good fans on that Scythe Mine 2 and you have equivalent NH-D14 performance.

The original Silver Arrow you can't find anywhere but its performance is about equal in comparison to the Noctua NH-D14. The Phanteks edges them both out. I've owned the Alpenfohn K2-Mount Doom, NH-D14, and currently use the Phanteks and without question it is the superior cooler not to mention it comes in various colors to match your color theme. Currently I have three 140mm Phantek fans equipped to it and running 3570K at 4.7GHz @ 1.41 volts. Holds the heat just fine thumb.gif

Have been looking some more at watercoolings.
I'm probably able to fit 2 140mm radiators from ek water blocks in the case (1 in the back and 1 on the bottom), would that be enough to oc the cpu at 4.4 or 4.6?

Also what would be the best way to hook the 2 rads up then?

1: res -> pump -> rad1 -> cpu -> rad 2 -> mb -> back to res

2: res -> pump -> rad1 -> rad 2 -> cpu -> mb -> back to res

3: res -> pump -> cpu -> rad1 -> mb -> rad 2 -> back to res

4: res -> pump -> cpu -> mb -> rad1 -> rad 2 -> back to res

I personally just ordered the Phantek (waiting for it to come) and it is $69.99 after $20.00 promo code at Newegg until 9/20 after that it will be $79.99 after $10.00 promo code till the end of the month.
