Insight on Delidding

Anyone have any insight on delidding?

My main questions:
1. Should I delid?

2. Anyone have done this? I like success stories!

3. I've googled this matter and many people on OCN think that it's a hoax and it won't bring down temps or it will only do it by negligible degrees. Is this true? Some people have seen massive drops!

4. I plan on leaving the IHS off since I don't like it, this won't damage the CPU right?

1. Are you limited by the temperatures and you want a higher overclock and don't mind losing warranty? Then I say go for it.

2. Many people have done it successfully: both on OCN and http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?280892-3770k-IHS-Removals-CPU-temp-dropped-from-79C-to-71C/page17 (I really like this thread, lots of success stories. I have done this successfully and got ~25C lower temps.

3. If you do it right and use a good TIM like Coollaboratory Liquid Pro, you can easily reduce temps by 10C and up to 35C.

4. You have a higher risk crushing the die when mounting your cooler. Also, you have to modify your mounting mechanism most likely and remove the upper parts of the retention bracket for this to work. There is also not much benefit of removing the IHS. People that don't use the IHS anymore sometimes see a very small (from what I have seen max ~3C) drop in temps and others even get worse results. Choosing the right TIM is much more important (Coollaboratory Liquid Pro).

How can Intel find out if you have delidded anyway?

Well wether they can find out or not how would you reapply the lid if you were to take it off?

I did mine a while back and got ~20C drop with ihs off and Prolimatech PK-1 compound. Running Prime95 for 14hr @4.9 HT highest temp was 79C. Too bad Coollaboratory Liquid Pro is not sold in Canada. I will buy some from PPC as soon as I figure out my job that I've lost.
If you planning on using that Silver Arrow in your sig, I would highly suggest to leave the ihs on. The cooler is pretty heavy and without the bracket support could crack the die with it's weight.

I forgot to change it, it's an H100 now. tongue.gif Do you think it'd be fine to run it without the IHS?

De-liding isn't rocket science it's super easy i'v done it a number of times with old Pentium 4's. My trick was using an ever so slightly bent razor blade and i did so with the curved edge/point facing upwards and carefully sliced through the rubber.

I saw some people doing some stuff on LGA775 or something like that where they put 2 razorblades on both side and used a blowtorch to slowly "pop" the thing off. Will that work or no?

The blowtorch is used to melt off solder to remove a soldered IHS, should not be needed for a cpu with paste instead of solder.

Got you! I thought it was an easier way. smile.gif Nevermind, not sure if I should do it. What happens if I run into CPU problems down the road? Also, is there a way to hide the fact that I delidded when I send it back to Intel?
