So for a while now, my old DV6Z-2100 laptop that I use for school was having hard drive issues, and I accepted the fact that it would soon die and I would need to purchase a new one. Well, after somewhat roughly sliding it on a carpet and it hitting a box in my room, I opened it up to a windows crashed, and when I restarted, I got the old BOOTMGR is missing, and, I was totally ok with buying a new hard drive. So, later that day, I prepared a Ubuntu 12.04 LTS x64 live usb via UNetBootin, and when I plugged it in and tried to boot of of it, i got that same message, and when I put in a Windows 7 install USB, one that i know works, it stops at a black screen with a mouse cursor. So, I was wondering, is it the motherboard? Thanks for any answers, and sorry if wrong forum.

Hi. Have you fitted a new HDD? The win7 install usb may not work if you are trying to install onto your faulty HDD. Maybe try an XP or Linux live CD rather than USB and see if you have any luck with that. I assume you know about pressing F9 to change the boot order. If you are getting the missing bootmgr message then I would think you only have HDD/software probs.

Constantly hit F12 at startup, this will bring up a BIOS boot device list, so you can select the USB drive. If you see a BOOTMGR message when trying to boot a Ubuntu live USB, clearly it booted to the hard drive. Going into BIOS to change the boot order also works, but the F12 method verifies that your USB drive is indeed recognized by your laptop. If its not recognized in a given USB port, restart and try another USB.
As for the HDD, I'd run some diagnostics on it. Very likely you can at least recover data from it.
