if you look at server motherboards, they can support up to 32gb modules, and im pretty sure that normal boards support 16gb. why does anyone need 16gb in one stick of ram? it isnt cost affective, and most people only use 4-8 if they are gaming/normal usage.

As far as I know the 16Gb sticks right now are ecc. Possibly when Haswell is released 16Gb will become main stream? As of right now there aren't a whole lot of boards that support more the 8Gb sticks.

I have heard that some newer Enthusiast ASUS boards support 16GB dimms, so far though they have only been tested in the labs at ASUS. Samsung has reported that it will make a 16GB dimm and release it in 2014 with the DDR4 architecture.
