Why are Origin's downloads so slow?

Thread Starter
I am trying to download Crysis 2 maximum Edition off origin and it so slow its not even funny it maxes at 111KB/s and my internet is capable of 900KB/s so something is wrong. Is it even worth contacting EA over or will they give me the same old BS about (it's your ISP). Steam gives me full 900KB/s steady so its only origin being slow.

Speed depends on server load. I'll let you know in a second if I'm having speed issues with Origin too.

Edit:

Getting ~14 MB/s on Origin, although that's less than half of what I'm getting on Steam. Either way, no issues for me.

Edit 2:

Origin download is slowing down significantly. They may be having issues behind the scenes.

I get way better speed on Origin than I do with Steam. I actually max out and even peak beyond my speed limit with Origin.

I have a 175mb/65mb fiber optic line.

And man! I don't understand how you guys can deal with download limits. There are 5 PCs in my house all streaming some form of media, plus me downloading a million things... I probably use over 1TB a month.

OMG that's terrible. How come it's so behind?

Right now I've been in the hospital for a few days and I have been surfing the net on a blistering fast128k line. Barely hits it too, I'm getting below 56k speeds for the most part. I used my cell phone as a hot spot for downloading some games and what not... and even that still gets around 6mb per sec. I forgot my 6gb limit and I'm almost there, then you have to pay $15 per gig.

You guys are seriously lacking on speeds! How are cell phones?

Not to rub it in more, but merely sharing info... but I only pay $65 bucks for my internet. $125 a month gets you 275mb down/150mb up.

Actually NBN is being rolled out, and should be in homes within the next 3-4 years max, supporting up to 10gigabit (1 gigabit max to begin with). Telstra are not going to own it, it is government contracted. ADSL2+ is quickly dieing. Cable options are also available, is it available in tasmania?

I'm in CBD sydney and we have access to 100megabit cable or ADSL2+ (5-15 megabits), and NBN in the next 12 months. Are you in a city or a town?

considering tasmania has a population of about 507000, most of them are old people, i live in ulverstone, between devonport(way larger) and burnie(even bigger still), its a city i guess(only 1 street for main shops some off streets about 30 shops), but quite a small one,
http://lmgtfy.com/?q=ulverstone+tasmania+google+maps

cant get cable here, asdl2 'reach' is allowed at this phone number due to port limits in this area and distance, however it just times out like crazy, tried for a couple years to get it working but couldnt, maybe its because the lines down here are like 45+ years old. i did move and rented by myself in devonport(which is to the east) to get internet there earlier this year, however they had reached max capacity(yes telstra) for tophats for ports for adsl2 and took them over 3 months to add another one ontop of an existing, quite slow imo, but yea could get adsl2+ there IN TOWN like 300m from exchange, 20m/2m or wateva, got like 1.4mb down 100-200 up or something cant remember, took telstra 42 days to fix the fault on the end of their line after i got a port, cause they didnt believe me that it was a fault at the exchange, had to get 2 technicians down to test to line..... my god tongue.gif u can see i dont like telstra, but anyway. all adsl1 plans, from any isp, run through telstras network, and i believe adsl2 aswell since its owned by them, so we pay poor prices, $90 for adsl1 in AUSTRALIAN dollars not USA so its prolly more if u convert it to USA...... that and 15000ms lag in mmo's rift wow etc...... fps is fine at 55-80ms, lowest ping ive ever seen is like 42ms...

but still 700m from exchange still cant get adsl2, they must be using old tech, or very old wires, and need new ones, cause my god 45 years they must be corroded....... but still, u cant even get them to replace them, even if u pay for them REGARDLESS OF PRICE, telstra will not do it. ........ the only thing to do is move house or go overseas and live there, its the only option..... and i just finished downloading 5gb through origin in 18 hours, and now it has to update the game so i guess i have to wait another day and do that overnight lol

cant get cable here, asdl2 'reach' is allowed at this phone number due to port limits in this area and distance, however it just times out like crazy, tried for a couple years to get it working but couldnt, maybe its because the lines down here are like 45+ years old. i did move and rented by myself in devonport(which is to the east) to get internet there earlier this year, however they had reached max capacity(yes telstra) for tophats for ports for adsl2 and took them over 3 months to add another one ontop of an existing, quite slow imo, but yea could get adsl2+ there IN TOWN like 300m from exchange, 20m/2m or wateva, got like 1.4mb down 100-200 up or something cant remember, took telstra 42 days to fix the fault on the end of their line after i got a port, cause they didnt believe me that it was a fault at the exchange, had to get 2 technicians down to test to line..... my god tongue.gif u can see i dont like telstra, but anyway. all adsl1 plans, from any isp, run through telstras network, and i believe adsl2 aswell since its owned by them, so we pay poor prices, $90 for adsl1 in AUSTRALIAN dollars not USA so its prolly more if u convert it to USA...... that and 15000ms lag in mmo's rift wow etc...... fps is fine at 55-80ms, lowest ping ive ever seen is like 42ms...
but still 700m from exchange still cant get adsl2, they must be using old tech, or very old wires, and need new ones, cause my god 45 years they must be corroded....... but still, u cant even get them to replace them, even if u pay for them REGARDLESS OF PRICE, telstra will not do it. ........ the only thing to do is move house or go overseas and live there, its the only option..... and i just finished downloading 5gb through origin in 18 hours, and now it has to update the game so i guess i have to wait another day and do that overnight lol

Have you looked into when NBN is available for you? If i remember correctly, parts of Tasmania were the first roll out zones, because of high population density and small size. It's worth putting your postcode into NBN rollout website and seeing when it's available for you. smile.gif
