Bootcamp issue

I'm having issues installing windows 7 (64) bit. After I hit install and bootcamp partitions the drive then restarts it freezes on the apple boot screen. Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

I have a mid2010 17" macbook pro 8gm ram model # A297. two harddrives with an external exclosure for the optical drive that came with the computer.

Are you trying to install it on the drive that's now in place of your optical drive? For me that wouldn't work..

What I usually do is partition with Disk Utility instead of bootcamp assistant, and then proceed to boot from the Windows DVD, format the desired partition to NTFS and install.. If it won't go past the Apple logo, try the DVD (and drive) on a different computer and see if you can boot from there.
