What's so great about quadros?

Thread Starter
I am about to build a computer for a friend and they keep on insisting that they needed a quadro card. He is very into movie editing and CAD so this seems like a good choice but i have a few questions. What makes a quadro so great for workstations? Couldn't I just get a 8800 for him and get similar performance? Are quadros any good for gaming? Can I run a quadro and a 7900gt in a sli mobo without using sli and then use the 7900gt for gaming and the quadro for editing? help will be appreciated

Quadros are made for CAD , and heavy rendering work, such as movie editing, computer animation ect. They are not better for gaming, they are actually worse, so you would be better off with a decent gaming card for playing games . And im not sure if you could run both in one box without some conflicts.

Image quality also, Quadro cards image is the better than GeForce except Quadro cards are not meant for gaming. Two different engines there.

If you don't want to spend a fortune on a Quadro card there is another alternative. Some Geforce cards can be unlocked to professional capabilities through RivaTuner. For example, many 6800 series cards can be made into a Quadro 4000 (I think?) through RivaTuner, yielding better performance with video editing and sorts (sites confirmed with benchmarks), for hundreds less. Be careful though because not every card can be unlocked.

Nope, you can't SLi those for the effect you wanted.

will this slow down the game performance?

hmm even the N7800 GTX can be with RivaTuner switched to QUADRO 4500 - im hawe it so.. it is for PROFESIONAL purposes used, MAYA, MAX, and CAD software, some Video soft too... and only difrence is in profesional capabilities like line draw, line softing, GELATO render etc.... in CORE is no diffrence, QUADRO 4500 aka 7800 GTX same speed, memory just design is another and NVIDIA hawe more bucks :-)

My brother's Quadro 1100 works fine for games! Granted, it's better at MAYA than gaming, but runs games just fine. I could have sworn I have seen SLI'd Quadro's before, I'll have a look around for linkage.
