Is SetFSB the only program I can OC my CPU?

Thread Starter
I have an MSI Wind U230. I've done a fair amount of research on this and can OC my GPU but it shows no gains. I've read that FSB increases net the real performance boosts. However I've not heard of anything other than SetFSB that lets you tweak it and the version I need to support my laptop was after it went pay.

Just wondering so I know if I need to donate to the guy or not. $10 isn't a big deal for free performance gains, imo.

Thanks.

Your laptop isn't built for games in any sense of the word. Honestly speaking, no overclock will help you here. Your iGPU is too weak to do much else than do generic day to day things. Even upgrading the CPU, which I doubt is possible in this case, would benefit you that much.

Uh huh... well fyi I can play Minecraft, Guild Wars, Terraria and Torchlight just fine. I've even ran World of Tanks and Borderlands however they were very choppy with crappy framerates. Thanks for not really answering the question though. smile.gif

I said screw it and donated to the guy and got SetFSB unlocked.

I said screw it and donated to the guy and got SetFSB unlocked.

See... this is the problem I have with people like YOU.

You ask a question and get an answer you don't like and THEN you return, within that same post, with a snide little remark about what your laptop is capable of and are just rude beyond reason or thought.

This is why I'm not very polite anymore with most laptop users, because you ALL think that just because you can play a couple games on the lowest settings with low framerates that your PC is going to gain a little performance and that I'm just wrong by default.

Minecraft uses one core, and runs off Java, so that's not surprising. Guild Wars is dated considerably and is playable with 10 FPS. Terraria... did you really just attempt this? rolleyes.gif Side scrolling 2D game = non-taxing to your system. Any PC within the last 8 years can play Terraria. That's not saying much either. And World of Tanks...? You got like what? 5 FPS in the garage?

Again, you're stating games that BARELY run on your machine and you want to overclock your system for better performance? By all means. >_> I wouldn't mess with the FSB on a laptop unless it was specifically made for gaming. You might be able to hit 2GHz but I wouldn't expect much from that. I had a old Toshiba that featured a 2.1GHz Turion II 64 X2, 3GB RAM, and a 3200+3470 Hybrid Crossfire solution and I couldn't play most of the games that you stated. I could hardly manage Fallout 3 for more than an hour before it crashed and that's ONLY because it preferred ATI cards over Nvidia.

I say these things for a reason. If I seem rude, it's because, again, of people like YOU that I deal with on a day-to-day basis.

Imma have to go with Img here. The games you mentioned being able to play are not taxing at all on a laptop. I have a 6year old acer that I play warcraft on without an issue .... would I use it to play a modern game on?> no. Would I bother trying to OC? No.

bahahah, wow dude pop a top a little? Nice to know you hold a grudge simply based on past experiences. Your post really did not address my question at all. You just jumped into it being a waste of time. That is my call to make. So don't get your pants in a twist when I make a fair call out. Yes I know this laptop is horrible graphics wise. A game is a game. It is irrelevant if any of the games I mentioned do not meet your "curve" of requirements for being a gaming laptop.

See, now that last paragraph was actually helpful in some respect. But the rest is complete trash. Nice of you to label me from one post though. I'll know who to ignore next time.

ps - I suggest you simply refraining from posting if "USERS LIKE ME" cause you to react the way you do.

I apologize. Straw broke the camel's back as they say. (>_<)

However, it's on you if you want to ignore me. I'm the one holding up this section along with a couple others. They know who they are and how grateful I am of their help.

I just have to say to be careful if you want to overclock. You've only got so much cooling capability.

I'll be honest, that sentence I posted earlier really was uncalled for... I guess I can attribute it to "past experiences" here with other topics as well. So I apologize for being the instigator.

Anywho, through trial and error I found that FSB/HT OC's on lower multi's did nothing. I need to push the CPU past its 1.6ghz limit to unleash this GPU's potential. I've read a few topics on other forums that are ancient, but have good info regarding the U230. So I went with similar settings they used and tried 238x8 for 1.9ghz and wow. Gained 5fps average in Torchlight 2 and surprisingly gained about 3 fps in Borderlands 2. Though the latter still runs too low of frames to enjoy. If I wanted to do chests runs it wouldn't be out of the question. But I think I'll be happy with TL2 for the next 4 weeks while I am out of town. smile.gif

I haven't read much on people pushing this past 2ghz so unfortunately I don't have much else to play with. I may bump the GPU up 100mhz on top of my 1.9ghz to see if anything is gained... brb

no gains with a GPU clock increase. CPU is def. the limiter. Gonna do more research and see just how much more I can squeeze out of this Athlon x2.
