Poor performance in games

Thread Starter
I havent updated my sig, but i have an E5300 at 3.2ghz and an overclocked GTX550ti 1gb. I feel like i should be pumping out more fps in certain games. Sometimes in CS:GO i dip down to 30-40 fps, is it because of a big bottleneck? Because if the gtx550 is anything like the 5770 ( read its a little better ) then i should be having a constant 60 in CS:GO atleast. Would a faster dual core be good for me? I want to buy a new CPU but will it really drastically increase my framerate? I can play BF3 on high with no AA i dip down to around 25-30 fps when looking at the whole map. I need about another 20fps fps and ill have a perfect 60fps in all of my games excluding bf3.

What do you guys suggest? my birthday is coming up soon and my girlfriend asked me what i wanted. I dont wanna make her spend more than 100 bucks, she was going to buy my the collectors edition of halo 4, but id rather have a new CPU. Also, one that i wont have to buy a new motherboard for would be nice.

Hmmm sorry about your problems I'll try and help. From reading your post you do have a rather outdated CPU, but I don't think it would bottleneck your GPU unless your playing at a resolution higher than 1080p (which I assume you're on). As for your games CS:GO and BF3, they would definitely run better with a quad-core CPU as they're both optimized to use quad-cores well, but your GPU power is lacking so BF3 might still be choppy. However since your CPU socket is old I can't seem to find any Core 2 Quads on newegg, http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115130 you might be able to find a cheap one on ebay

Your best bet would be find a nice motherboard cpu combo. If you're really on a budget I bet you could find a nice bulldozer/mobo combo. Which will handle CS:GO and BF3.

Another suggestion, you might want to try reducing your overclocks as they may be unstable and causing your performance problems.

Even if you don't go for one of the newer cpu's you would see a decent increase in performance with swapping your core 2 duo with a core 2 quad.

Yea i cant find any on newegg or tigerdirect. I have the gigabyte GA-P31-ES3G as my mobo ( not my sig mobo ).

I found tons of Q8200s all over ebay for around 120 dollars. Is that a good deal? Theyre still pretty expensive. Thinking about getting it unless someone, or I, can find a better deal

And no, i play at 1600x900

at 1600x900 you shouldn't be having these problems. Have you tried seeing if your overclocks are stable, maybe your PSU is having troubles? As for the $120 for core 2 quad I wouldn't pay more than $85 for it, it would be better to save your money and invest in a bulldozer or sandy bridge mobo/cpu.

I do agree with the above post.. But, if you don't want to build a new system there is a nice Q9550 for sale on OCN.. http://www.overclock.net/t/1302706/fs-us48-q9550-e0-ddr3-dominators-q9400-mobo-combos-e8400-ddr1-and-ddr2-ram
Your mobo should be able to hit at least 400Mhz FSB when pushing a C2Q.
Have you tried a fresh reinstall of Windows?

No, i havent tried a fresh install of windows in a long time, i guess i probably should though right? I play at 1600x900 i should be owning these games, not so much bf3 but i should still get playable framerates atleast, its wayy too choppy.

And yes, i even put it back to stock, got worse performance than before, i OCed it a little bit more and got some more fps in battlefield, but still not enough to where i can enjoy the game.

What cooler are you using for your CPU? Your sig rig says e5200, but you also said it's an e5300?? Anyway an E5200 at 266MHZ FSB will get you 3.325GHZ. So you have more overclocking room if you up the vcore and the FSB. Maybe shoot for 12.5 Multi x 300FSB = 3.750GHZ. Can't hurt your gaming experience! thumb.gif

Also a good read.. http://www.overclock.net/t/254734/gigabyte-ga-p35-ds3l-thread

I just have a stock cooler, and its pretty dusty, when i play CS:GO i was just dipping to 35fps, and for counter strike, thats unplayable to me. No matter what settings im on, nothing seems to help. Wether its maxed with 16xqcsaa or all low no AA or anything. I just dont know what to do, i shouldnt be getting that bad of performance

You overclocked your CPU on a stock cooler? Maybe because of the dust buildup and the increased heat from the overclocked cpu it's in a thermal protection mode and under-clocking itself..
