I've seen many people complain about the internet in canada. Although are the crap prices/caps/speeds due to monopolies or are there many companies that are just price fixing together?

Basically, there are a bunch of companies but they're in different parts of Canada. For example, in Quebec, we have Bell and Videotron. These are the only two "decent" ISPs with their own lines and they usually have exactly the same offers. To be honest though, Quebec is the worst part of Canada. The west and Ontario have Shaw which is pretty much like Comcast since they have caps but they're not enforced. Their prices are also decent. The CRTC which is supposed to regulate everything in terms of telecoms and prevent monopolies even wants to make unlimited offers illegal...

My ISP likes to sell 5-10mb/s connections as 40mb/s and if you realize your speeds are nowhere near good enough, they simply tell you "It's up to, with no guarantee of a minimum or even an average. This is with crazy throttling.

I pay $60/mnth ($85 not bundled) for 40/2 and it takes about 3 seconds on average for google to load. I recently got an S3 and spend more time on the internet on that, than on my PC now, as its many times faster.

Also Cust. Service is CRAP. My connection in my old place was so bad, they claimed it was the wiring and they could do nothing, sent a couple dozen techs out, even disabled the cable wire feeding into my bedroom to remove a splitter in the wall (without telling me, and I had a TV, with digital cable in the room rolleyes.gif ) Very competent bunch. They would always say the signals were fine and such, till you bring up screenshots and times and tell them about how bad the power levels were and such, and a few seconds later they would find those bad signals, admit and call a tech. They finally, after months of service calls and nothing being done, I requested, and after hours of talking to managers and tier 2 tech support, I got a recurring credit applied to my account. That was fine. After about 7 months they remove the credit, bill me full, and when I call in I get "We don't do recurring credits, PERIOD" and they refused to reapply. They also claimed it was a one time credit and notes on the account indicated as much, but they couldn't explain why it was done 7 months in a row, with a larger credit for a few months prior at the beginning of the trend of credits. After that, I got rid of them and went to the more expensive "crappier" guys. Paying more, but getting about the same speeds, minus the throttling at night.

So yea, I wish we had proper connections in Canada, at reasonable prices. Though in my area we don't have caps yet. I wouldn't be able to live with caps, I go through about 3-4GB a day easily. Heck, I sometimes use more than 60GB's in a day. If I were confined to 60GB a month... dear god... And pay the same price... Mother of god...

This is what we get AFTER the upgrade to 50/5 ... The only thing faster here is commercial net. Keep in mind when I was at 20/2 I rarely got better than 13 down and 1.2 up...

I pay 60$ a month for 15/1 with a 90gb cap; that cap is the reason I don't have netflix.

they have 200 Mbits for 200$ a month and a 200gb cap...just ridiculous.

Telecom companies around here (Quebec) screw their customers so bad.

I've heard of some people getting 4g on their phones then cutting their home internet completely because they just redirect the internet through a micro usb cable. I've done this with 3G like so: Phone, micro usb to laptop to PS3. I played BF3 online with no lag. If 4G is available to all of you Canadians, I'd switch! smile.gif

It finally got better here since last couple of months. Bell installed its optic fiber network and Videotron just upped everyone's connexion by 2x. Still when you pay 60$ / month for 50Gb @ 1mbps, there's a problem somewhere... At least I don't get throttled down with them.

But, I still think 60$ for 90gb @ 2mbps is still to much when I compare other ISP in other countries mad.gif
