5.1 Speakers, Is a receiver needed?

Thread Starter
Sorry for the potential stupidity but here goes nothing. I found 5.1 speakers in the basement (BR, FR, center, FL, BR and sub) and they all accept bare speaker wires as their outputs. I am wondering how I can connect these to my sound card (creative fatal1ty). Is a 5.1 receiver required or can I solder bare speaker wire to 3 different 3.5mm jacks (1 for center+sub, 1 for fr + fl, 1 for bl+br) and let the soundcard handle it?

If you want to use your computer sound card, you'd only need an amp, not a receiver; but only do that if your sound card is really good.

Is the sub powered or not? If not you'll need a six channel amp/reciever. What speakers are they?

The speakers are part of this system .I guess I'll be looking at some refurbs. Any specific features I should be looking for? The sub is not powered.

Surround Speaker Impedance : 3 ohm
Subwoofer Speaker Impedance : 1.5 ohm
Center Speaker Impedance : 3 ohm
Front Speaker Impedance : 3 ohm

You, sir, need a rather hefty amp; specifically, one designed for long-term 4 ohm use.

Those things aren't worth the time of day. You'd be better off just buying another HTIB than buying anything to power those speakers.

You could always spend a grand a get a wonderful HTIB from swan called the M60W! Awesome system has a amp and everything, check it out from lockware, if you don't want to waste your time with home theater equipment and a receiver, upgrade those headphones! HD598!
