3930K - Overclocking questions

Thread Starter
Hi,

I have a Rampage IV board, i7 3930K. I've done some OC'ing tests today. My R4E frankly, was giving generous voltages to my CPU on stock (3.8GHz turbo) settings (circa 1.35V vcore on prime95 @ 36hrs).

Today I decided to play with voltages and by the way OC it to push it.
Here's what i've got...

VCore limit = 1.32V || Freq 4.4Ghz (multiplier = 44)
According to CPU-Z it was doing around 1.29xx volts when running prime95. Temps were nice.

But after I've tried 4.6Ghz and got constant BSOD's. I've put the VCore limit up to 1.39V before stopping completely the tests. I fear going at 1.4V... I've been told 1.4V is a limit.

So I have a few questions now
1- Can it damage the CPU to get Win7 BSOD's/hangs while testing it?
2- Do you think running it @ 1.4V is fine for a couple of minutes, say an hour?
3- Do you think it's possible to tweak it to get better and stable @ 4.6Ghz with a lower than 1.4V vcore?
4- How it averages with that i.e. 4.4Ghz @ 1.29xxV ? Is it... average or better or...? What do you think?
5- Any suggestions? I'm kinda not very experienced in that domain so I decided today to play it... safe.

I did not played yet with more advanced options such as... offset mode and bclk. Mind I really just changed the VCore limit from auto to 1.32 and raised clock mult to 44. I'd like to see it go 46... just don't wanna damage up things. I'd like it to last me 2-3 years or something...

Thanks!

Yannick

Please fill up this form and add it in your signature so we can know what you have and how to deal with it.
Except voltages you should monitor temperatures and Power consumption! Regardless Clock and all those parameters you will get picture where to go weary soon.
For now -> if you are on air cooler don't go over 1.35V until you get familiar with all way and how!
Regards and happy OC cheers.gif

No, the most it can do is corrupt files on the OS/hard drive but even that is extremely rare. BSODs aren't as bad as they used to be. They are actually great tools to see what you need to do to fix the OC
2- Do you think running it @ 1.4V is fine for a couple of minutes, say an hour?
yes as long as your temps are in check
3- Do you think it's possible to tweak it to get better and stable @ 4.6Ghz with a lower than 1.4V vcore?
Depends on the chip, but most can do 4.6 under 1.4v, most chips don't really hit the OC wall until 4.8
4- How it averages with that i.e. 4.4Ghz @ 1.29xxV ? Is it... average or better or...? What do you think?
It's average to below average IMO
5- Any suggestions? I'm kinda not very experienced in that domain so I decided today to play it... safe.
Fill out your rig settings so we know what you're working with. With the RIVE you will find that the higher you oc the harder it is, largely due to VRM cooling, so unless you are watercooling the VRMs or have good airflow over them don't expect to get much higher that 4.6-4.8. The RIVE is great for OC'ing and makes things pretty easy for the novice. Be sure to keep the BIOS fairly up to date as updates can often make OC'es more stable.
Once you post your rig details you might want to restart, enter the bios (with a thumbdrive plugged in) and start capturing screen shots so we can see exactly what you are working with.
These chips can get warm so hope you have some good cooling.

Thanks guys for the input...
Seems I cannot get past 4.5GHz, I seriously hit a shocking wall on 4.6GHz, the VCore needs to be pushed probably farther than 1.4V, which I'm not willing to (want to keep it long).
And I thought Costa Rica chips were the best... rolleyes.gif

I ran a 36 hours test on prime95 on stock RIVE settings after setting up my build, just to test everything was fine. Hope it did not degrade my CPU...

I'll try updating the BIOS, I really have the oldest here.

This is quite disappointing...

As for the temps, I've got the NH-D14 backing me up. The temps really maintain themselves correctly. I've tried once at 1.39V and ran prime95, the fartest it went was around 78-80C. I'm on air indeed. After that, prime95 failed, BSOD... the 4.6 GHz malediction.

P.S. Yes, I'll update my sig soon.

Without changing fan's for faster ones it is waste of time. Try to reach 4.5 GHz for "benchmark " and "show room" - I'm running those toy's at sweet 4.3 GHz (48/7 biggrin.gif )
