hi guys, question here, ive been reading and asking some buddies questions, and they say, well they hear TLER can be a issue since the caviars have it disabled thus can drop out of an array?, then i read that in raid 0 TLER is best to be low ~7 seconds to Disabled, whats your takes on this?

thanks!

I think the Caviar Blacks are your best hope outside of the raid edition drives, I don't think it's that they will timeout, it's that they can, but only if they enter a deep error recovery state IIRC. Lots of people raid them without any issues at all.

It's not usually an issue. TLER of 30 seconds only becomes a problem when a drive has problems that cause the error recovery to kick in. Many drives function fine for years regardless of whether they're set to 7 or 30 seconds.

That said, if your RAID-0 array breaks apart... that sucks. tongue.gif But even that may not be the end of the world:
http://www.overclock.net/t/478557/howto-recover-intel-raid-non-member-disk-error/80

Lacking TLER used to be a huge problem, but I haven't heard anyone complaining about it in recent times. I know that Hitachi has a reputation for not having drives drop from arrays - since WD acquired them, I wonder if they used any of the tech to improve their own drives?

If you're really worried about it, or are planning a large array (5+ drives) where the odds increase dramatically, you should look into... Hitachi drives, RE4 drives (7200RPM), Red drives (5400RPM), and enterprise lines from all manufacturers.

i already raided, and not worried, ive had this spare FALS hd sitting here for a while and it was time to format, i've never raided before so i figured to try it out,

so hd tune Read test on a quick 5 gb i had as high as 270 MBPS and low as 230 MPS but averaged about 249MBPS, which is good, and burst speed was like 2650 or something liek that, so what? 2.6 GBPS, so i think thats a good sign ha ha
