Should pagefile be disabled?

Thread Starter
Pretty simple question, I have read conflicting views online after someone on this site recommended disabling it because it will make gaming a lot better. I have 16GB of 1600MHZ RAM, should I disable pagefile or not? I have read it can cause a ton of system instability and game crashing and things like that, even memory corruption.

So what's the verdict, should it be disabled to provide the 'mircale' of supposedly making everything like 100X faster or what?

Just leave it enabled. You can decrease its size to get some disk space back, but disabling it completely will just cause issues. You wouldn't gain any benefit from disabling it anyway. If you have 16 gigs of ram, Windows is never going to need to use the page file for anything major.

Leave it enabled, set it between 512mb-1024mb.

If you want a surefire way to know what kind of Virtual memory you're using without having to decipher the memory usages stats in Resources or in Task manager, check a thread I made a long time ago:

Pagefile Tool - It will help you!

I suggest to know what kind of weekly/daily load (depending on how you use your PC) you should check with this tool for those timelines, weekly or daily. Then you set your pagefile to something above what your maximum usage is.

Disabling it can and does cause problems for some, while others claim no foul effects from disabling it. I'm in the former camp where having it disabled (even with large amounts of RAM installed) caused problems with some software.

The link in that thread is probably dead (Megaupload) so if you want a copy of it I can send it in a PM. But it should be available if you search around or Google it. thumb.gif

Mine has been disabled for a few years. With 16gb of ram I never run into problems.

Windows still uses pagefile regardless with how much memory you have. It tries its best to put idle programs in virtual memory and programs currently active into memory. So it doesn't matter if you have 8gb of ram or 64gb of ram, Windows will still dump stuff into virtual memory.

With 16gb of ram you can easily get away with having it disable. I have mine disabled and my friend who has 12gb of ram has his disabled and we never experienced any issues. Though your mileage will very.

Give it a go, for goodness sake!

It's not like you can't switch it back on again.

This. Some programs look for it "just in case" and if it does not see it can cause issues.
A small pagefile does not use much space and helps prevent possible issues.

Disabling the page file is generally a bad idea as some applications rely on it. Reducing its size, however, is perfectly fine and good practice to regain free space. Just make sure you have a sizable paging file. I'd say 2GB or so minimum. Or offload it to a disk that has plenty of space (but it should be connected via SATA or other fast connections.)

Edit: No there is no significant performance benefit to disabling the paging file. It'll prevent the contents of your RAM from going into it sometimes but usually that doesn't even help much. It helped a lot more when hard drives were slower and SSDs didn't exist. But it never helped FPS or gaming load times.

Yet another edit: This is one of those optimizations where people claim it works miracles and on super rare occasions it can but usually it's just placebo. You can disregard most Windows optimizations since if there was a way to get free speed with no side affects, it would be the default setting. Microsoft isn't just going to let their OS be slower for no reason.
