So I decided to get my first Smartphone SGS3

Thread Starter
So I had been using an old Samsung Vice for the past 3 years avoiding early smartphones as they were cool, but not quite where I wanted it to be before I got on that boat, especially at that price. I wanted to wait a little more, but I figured the SGS3 was good enough for a first smartphone.

Well, since I had not used a smartphone, and not really cared about them, I only really stayed up to speed on the hardware spec's. I know nothing of android really, but I want to get to know it better. So I'm looking for some help. I got mine through Bell as I got a decent deal and a free SGS3 with some extras. But it came with all sorts of stuff preloaded, and I just know its bogged down with crapware... So I'm looking for info and help on how to get this thing customized.

So I'd like to get help on custom roms. Started reading up on it but if you guys know some good sources, let me know.

I also want to learn about overclocking and undervolting, if theres ways to create performance profiles, apps for monitoring performance and anything else helpful.

I'm new to android and smartphones in general, so I need all the help I can get.

Galaxy S III is more than enough as a good start on a first smartphone.

Pretty much what GuilT1 said... although be aware that XDA is not very "noob friendly" so I would recommend on starting to read stickied posts and using the search feature. Pretty much any what question you have was probably answered.

The most popular custom ROM would be CyanogenMod 10 which features Android 4.1.1 (Jelly Bean) and other features. It is not based off TouchWiz, it is based off AOSP which will look completely different from what your stock phone looks like. Alongside, you would need a custom recovery... most popular ones are Clockwork Recovery and TWRP (Team WIn Recovery Project).

I'd recommend just playing around with the stock ROM... if you feel like the need to experiment, then do that. But enjoy the phone--there are so many things to do a side from flashing custom ROMs like looking on the Play Store.

You can ask me anything as I'm a pretty experienced user on XDA but I don't use a Galaxy S3, I use a Galaxy Nexus but I can answer the general questions you may have without any problems.

Thanks for the info. I've been browsing the XDA forums. A bit over my head for a lot of the stuff. Wish I had actually kept up on it, even if I didn't have a smartphone, simply because I knew I'd get one sooner or later. But alas, I simply kept reading about the tech.

Oh well, another thing to immerse myself in I guess smile.gif

And about getting to know the phone before jumping into the complex stuff. Definitely. I find its been quite useful just playing around opening and checking out everything and anything to figure it out. I'm actually quite impressed. The only thing I'm a bit disappointed in is that I have the dual core, whereas I was kind of looking forward to the quad exynos over the dual qual. though I understand multicore on android isn't the biggest of benefit for most things. But I do notice the phone getting a little warm, something I'll be looking into soon. Not sure whats normal for smartphones, as I haven't used any more for than a few minutes playing with a friends, or at the store.

Just keep reading guides and noob stuff on XDA and you'll get it in about a week smile.gif. It's not as hard as it may seem to be. It gets to be extremely fun once you understand how to do it.

You can get rid of some of the junk ware if you go into settings then applications and try to uninstall.

Like when you first started dabbling with your custom built PC, it can be a little daunting. In no time you will know the stuff like the back of your hand. As it has been mentioned prior, XDA is the place to go. They are sticklers about where you post so make sure you post in the right forum. Most of all don't post questions in ROM development forums unless its about that specific ROM. And your post shouldn't be about how to use a feature but to report a bug. You can post those questions in the Q&A forums but not in the devs. Welcome to android!!!

It's not that much of a difference. Yeah, you get better benchmarking results but man... benchmarking are just numbers. Who cares smile.gif you get 2GB of RAM as an alternative.
I use a Galaxy Nexus on Android 4.1.1 and it's blazing fast so quad core isn't necessary (at least not now) but if it was offered to me at the same price and was a Nexus device (I love nexus devices) hell yeah im all game for a quad core! but im perfectly content with the snapiness at the moment

Most pre-installed (and uninstallable) apps that you find on your Galaxy S3 can be disabled by going into Settings -> App Manager -> Find The App (not a button called "find the app) -> Click Disable

This is so you don't have to root to get rid of bloatware.

OP,

I would suggest installing an aftermarket launcher like Nova Launcher and messing around with the settings to find something you like. You also picked a fantastic first Smartphone, but don't ever expect to get battery life like you would get with a feature/dumbphone because there is a lot going on with these phones. Most people claiming to get insane battery life never turn on their screens and it shows when they post a screenshot and it says "20% Screen" in their battery stats.

Also, there is no need to overclock your phone or undervolt the cpu because most of the battery drainage comes from your LTE modem and your screen. You'd probably see a VERY minor increase in batterylife with undervolting, while actually adding to instability. Don't worry about performance on your phone like you would on a PC.

If you want to install a Custom ROM, I would suggest looking at Cyanogenmod 10 as it has a nice mixture of features and stability. Google the proper Cyanogenmod wiki for your phone. Most people in the custom rom business make terribly ugly roms so CM10 is the only one I could suggest.

Finally, read the manual. The Galaxy S3 has a lot of cool features that are actually pretty nice during daily use. Smart Stay is one of my favorites because I hate when the screen turns off while I'm reading an article and not scrolling around.

P.S. DO NOT INSTALL APP KILLERs like Juice Defender or Advanced Task Killer. They do nothing but slow down booting up apps and serve no purpose in Android, as Android just freezes the app in the background when its not using them.

Link to CM10: http://fitsnugly.euroskank.com/?rom=cm10 (Under devices select your phone (d2att, etc) -- this is a 'unofficial' version of CM10. It includes features that are still pending approval by CM maintainers.

Another good alternative launcher I would also recommend is Apex Launcher. Apex & Nova are relatively close to each other, so whichever one you choose to go with. you won't be disappointed. But it depends... I prefer Apex.

Agreed with task killers, not necessary
